Emory SOM recognizes 71 DOM members this Doctors' Day
In recognition of Doctors’ Day, which is celebrated annually on March 30, the Emory School of Medicine Recognitions Committee sent out a call for nominations for doctors across the School of Medicine who go above and beyond. More than 350 Emory faculty members were nominated by their peers and colleagues for their dedication to improving the health and well-being of our patients and community through the care they provide, the research they conduct, and their efforts to teach and inspire learners. We’d like to send a special recognition to the 71 Department of Medicine faculty members who were recognized for going above and beyond. We are proud to call them our
colleagues, teachers, and friends. Congratulations to all of the honorees!
A look back at Emory Match Day
Emory Match Day was an incredible day to celebrate an exciting moment in a learner's medical career. As we look back at Match Day, we're thrilled to reshare a spotlight on Humphrey Pruett, who matched into our J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program! During his time at the Emory School of Medicine, Humphrey had the opportunity to learn from many of DOM's incredible faculty including Bryan Wells, MD (Cardiology), a mentor and leader who impacted his medical education. We are thrilled he will stay at Emory, and continue his medical journey
here in the Department of Medicine. Read an excerpt below and click the button to read the full article!
During his MD studies, Pruett dove headfirst into life at Emory. “I feel like I’ve found my people after getting to know the amazing faculty members in the department of internal medicine,” he says. The MD program allowed him to experience once-in-a-lifetime opportunities like learning to read electrocardiograms (EKGs) from cardiology pioneer Nanette Wenger, MD. “It was incredible to have exposure to such an
absolute legend and being able to teach the EKG to first-year medical students,” he says. Pruett also contributed curriculum design to the Center for Holistic Student Success’ peer tutoring program. Clinical training at Grady Memorial Hospital allowed him to serve the community and further hone his skills.

Division of Hospital Medicine celebrates milestone anniversary for Sheila Harris
Written by: Vena Crichlow, MA | Data Analyst, Division of Hospital Medicine
Congrats to Shelia Harris who recently celebrated 20 years with the Hospital Medicine (EDHM)! The division hosted a celebration for her in February, where staff expressed their deep appreciation for her dedication, leadership, and support in her role within the definitive observation unit (DOU) admins and hospitalist team.
Since joining the Division in 2005, Sheila has supported many faculty, including Dan Owens, MD, Dan Dressler, MD, and the current Division Chair, Dan Hunt, MD. She also has been instrumental in helping to recruit and retain the diverse group of providers that comprise the largest academic hospital medicine nationally as well as partnering with the Emory International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) department to coordinate
immigration processes for both new hires and current providers.
When asked about her tenure with the division, Sheila shared, “Over the past 20 years, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this department. The team is made up of an incredibly diverse and talented group of individuals, and the leadership team goes above and beyond to support and value each person’s input.”

Grant Cancellations Q&A Session
Grant Cancellations Q&A Session
Wednesday, April 2 | 5–6 p.m. | Zoom We are aware these are unprecedented times and there are many questions regarding changes at the NIH, grant cancellation notices, and the impact on our research community.
To address these concerns, DOM's Office of Research will be holding a virtual Q&A session this Wednesday, April 2. This opportunity will allow investigators to bring any questions to DOM Chair Carlos del Rio, MD, and Vice Chair of Research, Vibha Lama, MD, MS. There will be additional sessions with leadership as we continue to monitor developments from the federal government.
Please stay tuned for more information.
Recent NIH Grant Cancellation Notices
Unfortunately, in the past few days, many of us have received grant cancellation notices. We know as investigators how devastating that is and what the impact is on investigators, their study teams, and trainees in our Emory Department of Medicine community. As we navigate these very difficult times, we remain committed to research at Emory and would like to provide you with information as to the process to appeal these decisions. - Remember that grants are awarded to universities and not individuals, so all appeals must be submitted on behalf of the University centrally through the Office of Sponsored
Programs (OSP).
- Appeals must be submitted within 30 days of termination, and the process is time-consuming, so it’s important to start within a week of termination.
If you receive an NIH grant cancellation notice for an award on which you are the PI, Emory's OSP has likely already been notified as well. However, if you receive a notification from a collaborator on a grant in which Emory is not the primary institution it is unlikely that OSP knows about it. If that is the case, please let OSP know and the DOM using the button below.
