Did you know that someone needs blood every THREE SECONDS? Like many of you, I hardly gave the need for blood products much thought. It wasn’t until a family member was going through cancer treatment that I realized the need for blood goes well beyond the emergency room support. Due to an ongoing blood shortage, there were delays in her receiving this component vital to her care. The nurse informed me that patients receiving treatment were given 20% less blood products than usual. While that may not seem like much, when you are struggling to survive and must wait until your counts drop even further for assistance, it’s HUGE! I knew right then that I needed to do something to help. That’s when I reached out to the Board of the Grandwood
Park Park District.
We partnered with Versiti Blood Centers last fall and hosted a successful blood drive. Versiti Blood Centers work with local hospitals in our area, including Northwestern Medicine Hospital Systems, to supply blood products. You can even receive an email informing you when your donation was used to help someone in need! With our first drive being so well received by the community, we decided to host three this year. Drive dates in 2022 are all on Mondays from 3 PM – 7 PM. Mark your calendars with these dates: March 28, June 20, and October 10. Appointments are recommended so why not schedule your date with donation for all three today!
