Sustainability at SFO

April 22 is Earth Day! From our zero waste goals to water filling stations across the terminals, SFO is taking steps big and small to protect our planet.

SFO concessions are also doing their part to operate sustainably. Mama Go’s Filipino Cuisine, located in Harvey Milk Terminal 1, is leading by example with their reusable food trays (pictured left). Since rolling out these trays in December 2022, Mama Go’s has seen a notable reduction in the use of to-go and single-use packaging, eliminating the use of an average of 3,050 paper bags per month. This program doubles down on Mama Go’s existing efforts to use 100% compostable packaging, including bamboo fiber straws, cups, plates and flatware. Bravo, Mama Go’s, for your efforts to promote waste reduction and advance SFO’s zero waste goals! Photo courtesy of @jmb_rebel / Mama Go’s

Celebrating National Volunteer Month: Q&A with Marge Stone

Since 1955, a dedicated team of volunteers have staffed our Departures Level Information Desks—ready to assist passengers at a moment's notice. This National Volunteer Month, we’re spotlighting Marge Stone, one of 136 volunteers currently supporting SFO.

How long have you been volunteering?
I’ve been volunteering at SFO for 40 years. Right now, I serve four hours a week. I’m also working with a great group of volunteers. We support each other and the passengers are very nice.

How has your role as a volunteer changed during your time at SFO?
When I first started volunteering, we were much busier. Passengers didn’t have phones or computers so we were a go-to resource. Nowadays, common questions I get asked are about where to charge phones, finding the Lyft/Uber pick-up spot or locating an airline check-in counter.

What motivates you to volunteer at SFO?
This is the best place to be. The community needs you and it’s rewarding to help others. What keeps me coming back year after year is being able to get out, interact with others and assist passengers.

Thank you, Marge, and all SFO volunteers!

SFO Museum: To Survive on This Shore

For over five years, photographer Jess T. Dugan and social worker Vanessa Fabbre traveled throughout the United States creating To Survive on This Shore: Photographs and Interviews with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Older Adults. The resulting portraits and interviews provide a nuanced view into the struggles and joys of growing older as a transgender person and offer a poignant reflection on what it means to live authentically despite seemingly insurmountable odds. This exhibition is on display in the Ruth Kadish Gallery, located post-security between Terminals 2 and 3 through July 13, 2023. Photo courtesy of SFO Museum.

How Many Folds Does it Take to Make a Paper Crane?

The answer? It depends on who's folding! Passengers traveling through Terminal 3 were invited to fold their own origami paper crane as part of our SFO Celebrates Cherry Blossom Festival from April 4–18. This included live entertainment by Bay Area performers, a cherry blossom backdrop and origami folding. Passengers can look forward to more SFO Celebrates events throughout the year!
