Students in Years 7 and 9 completed NAPLAN testing over the past two weeks. This was a huge task, and well done to Mrs Bernasconi for all the planning and preparation as well as the organisation for this to happen so smoothly. Well done and thank you to all the staff who supported our students during the tests; a great effort from you all. Mrs Bernasconi leaves the school on Friday to take up a Learning and Wellbeing position and we wish her well for her future endeavours and thank her for the positive contributions she has made to the school over many years.
Students from Years 7 to 11 who are members of the Show Team have been competing at Wingham Beef Week after a break of two years. It was pleasing to see several of our students included in television footage of the event earlier in the week as well as being interviewed about activities and preparation for the show. There are many photos on our Facebook page showcasing the students, staff, and cattle looking great with many students wearing ribbons of success and all looking great in their new uniforms. Congratulations and well done to all involved.
Parent/Teacher interviews were held during the last two weeks and unfortunately some staff were absent on those days. Please do not hesitate to make contact with staff if they were absent or you were unable to attend the interviews. Deputy Principals, Ms Gilbert and Mr Vonbun, will also be able to assist parents with enquiries.
Mid-course examinations begin for Years 7 to 10 next week. Students have been issued with a timetable and should there be any issues, students should see their relevant Deputy Principal - Year 7 - Mrs Clough, Years 8 and 10 - Ms Gilbert and Year 9 Mr Vonbun.
The P&C meeting will be held in Week 6 on Tuesday 31 May in the staff common room at 3.45pm. Please come along and support our P&C and find out more about the school. The President will be asking for nominations for Vice President from eligible members, as this position was unable to be filled at the AGM in Term 1.  We are looking forward to meeting you there in Week 6.

Year 10 Japanese Class Learning Origami

The Year 10 Japanese class has been learning about Hiroshima and the effects of the atomic bomb on people's lives. As part of this topic, they have learned how to make an origami paper crane, which has become a symbol of peace in Japan. This was inspired by Sadako Sasaki, a 12 year old girl who died of leukaemia as a result of radiation exposure to the bomb. She believed that making one thousand paper cranes would make her well again. Here the students are proudly showing off their origami skills.

Year 9 and 10 Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking for Years 9-10 sport started up again this term. The group has been making the most of our new set of school bikes to develop riding skills and fitness. The first session was a bit wet but everyone had fun exploring part of the Queens Lake trail. We plan to explore the mountain bike trails around Jolly Nose Mountain Bike Park and other local areas which will require some bus travel from school. If it’s too wet to go bush during any week, we’ll try to do riding skills activities at school. It is advisable that students bring appropriate cycling gear such as light clothing, comfortable sturdy shoes, light rain jacket if required, drink bottle/hydration pack etc.
There are still spaces available in the group so if your child in would like to join, they need to talk to Mr Anderson the Year 9-10 Sport Coordinator.

Port and Kempsey Learning Hubs under the Spotlight

Port Macquarie Library has been home to our Port Hub for several years now.  It provides a generous study space and with other people studying and activities occurring around us, we feel part of the larger community.  Distance education students are welcome to attend from 9.30am every Tuesday.  We have a mixture of students attending but most are in Year 10. This year we have had two students transition back to school.
