Bishop' Homily for Pentecost Sunday

[St. Anthony of Padua Church, Wailuku (Confirmation & First Holy Communion); St. Theresa Church, Kihei (Confirmation & First Holy Communion); St. Joseph Church, Makawao (Confirmation & First Holy Communion)]

I have seen many miracles in my life, and I am sure you have too – or will in the future.

I have seen people who were dying, but when others started praying for them, they made a recovery that even astounded their doctors. I have seen couples in terrible marriages who were always fighting with one another and living in marital misery, have their lives turned around and become the most loving couples, living in marital bliss. I have seen couples who were expecting a child so worried that raising the child would be such a burden that they considered ending the life of that child even before birth; but someone intervened and they had the child and are so grateful now for the experience of love that they could not have imagined before. I have seen homeless people find a home because others cared enough about them to help them and worked very hard to make it happen. These – and many more – are all real miracles! Read more...

Diocese Gains New Priest with Ordination of Arrion Rosales-Llantos

Bishop Larry Silva congratulates the newly ordained Father Arrion Rosales-Llantos after his ordination Mass May 19 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. (HCH photo | Anna Weaver)

As Deacon Arrion Rosales-Llantos emerged from the minivan that delivered him to the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu for his ordination on May 19, someone shouted nearby.

“The bridegroom has arrived!”

The voice was that of the Diocese of Honolulu’s Office of Worship director, Father Alfred Omar Guerrero, himself celebrating six years of priesthood that very evening.

“Are you nervous?” Father Guerrero gently teased the soon-to-be priest. “It’s not too late!”

Deacon Rosales-Llantos did indeed seem a little nervous as he carried a garment bag inside to get ready for the 6 p.m. Mass from which he would emerge “a priest forever” as Scripture puts it. Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Paul VI
1897–1978
Memorial – May 29

Giovanni Battista Montini was born in northern Italy, about fifty miles east of Milan. He was the second of three boys. His father was an attorney who ran a Catholic newspaper in the Province of Brescia and a member of the Italian Catholic Action, a lay organization that advocated for a greater influence of the Catholic faith within society. His mother was from a wealthy noble family, but her parents’ death when she was young resulted in her spending much of her teenage years in a boarding school in Milan run by French nuns. As a child, Giovanni was called “Battista” by his family. He was educated by Jesuits, and enjoyed sports and playing cards. When he was twelve, Battista was diagnosed with a chronic heart flutter and suffered from intestinal difficulties. He often missed long periods of school, spending time at the family villa and receiving private tutoring. Read more...
