Men's & Women's 1-5 Pairs hit the green this weekend Howick welcomes John AlmondJohn Almond has joined Howick Bowling Club as Club Manager. John said, “Introduced to bowls as a child, watching mum on weekends win many centre and national titles, it was only a matter of time that eventually I would find myself playing the same game! I’ve been a member of East Tamaki Bowling Club since 2013.” As a business owner, John has vast leadership and management skills. In 2022, he was ready to change the pressures of a high-demanding role, so he sold his stake in the business – and was ready to apply his business skills to a passion… bowls! His new journey has been as an apprentice greenkeeper at Howick under the guidance and mentorship of Paul Hickey. The greenkeeper role has enabled John to connect with the broader bowling community, on and off the green. John commented, “I'm excited by my new role; to be part of the Club is the Hub programme, being part of bowls, making a small difference in promoting the sport and looking at increasing the profile of bowls in the local community." "Bowls has great sportsmanship, camaraderie, and competition. The feeling of satisfaction out on the green, it’s a relaxing way of spending free time.” Club is the HubThe Club is the Hub is backed by the Rawhiti Fund and has been set up to enable Bowls Auckland to support clubs to be the heart of their community. This will be achieved through partnership and by creating professionally run clubs (i.e. club managers) that can support and enhance the volunteer network (not replace it) to deliver outstanding experiences to their membership and the wider community. Bowls Auckland CEO, Dean Bartlett said, "We are extremely grateful to all volunteers within bowls and put simply, there would be no sport nor clubs without them. We understand the time and effort that goes into running a bowling club and want to if we can lighten the load a little through this programme while at the same time increasing the experience of bowlers and the wider community." "We have been thrilled to support Howick through the process and look forward to partnering with John and the club to achieve their strategic objectives – which will include an awesome covered green facility!"
