This year we have expanded the series to cover a range of new topics, with a dozen sessions running from 2 November to 8 December. You will learn about different career opportunities within and outside academia as well how to identify your skills, plan your next steps, build connections, and apply for jobs. Highlights of this year’s program are two career panels featuring a number of PhD alumni from both humanities and STEM fields and a workshop on developing emotional intelligence, an important skill any career. Flexing your Communication Style When: 11 October 2021, 12:00pm - 1:30pm In this workshop you will identify your own preferred communication style and workplace preferences, reflect on how your preferences and communication style influence your workplace relationships, and learn how to “flex” your communication style to allow you to forge positive relationships with colleagues. Register for waitlist. The PhD Experience When: 12 October 2021, 1:00pm - 4:30pm This workshop draws on an activity and team-based problem-solving approach. A series of interactive activities have been developed to represent stages of the PhD journey. It is a chance to get involved in and learn from focussed activities and learn some of the skills of working in a team. Recommended for students who have in in candidature at least 6 months. Register for waitlist. Working with your Supervisor (Sciences) When: 14 October 2021, 10:00am - 12:00pm The relationship you have with your supervisor is crucial in determining your PhD experience. They are your primary source of guidance as you undertake an individual research project and even the best student/supervisor relationships can experience periods of strain through the ups and downs of research. In this workshop you will learn what you can do to establish a positive working relationship with your supervisor and ultimately get the most out of your HDR experience. Register here. Pitch Perfection When: 19 October 2021, 10:30am - 11:30am A pitch is about engaging, enticing and moving people to action. In this workshop, Sharon Ferrier from Persuasive Presentations, will discuss 3 important elements you must communicate in every pitch and how to think on your feet. Register here. Statistical Comparisons in R When: 20-21 October 2021, 9:00am - 12:30pm This hands-on training, presented by Intersect, will introduce key concepts of inferential statistics in R. Learn how to choose and use the appropriate statistical test for data such as correlation, contingency tables, ANOVA, chi-square and t-test. Register here. eProcurement Information Session When: 21 October 2021, 10:00am - 11:00am This workshop will explain why the University uses the eProcurement system and how to use it. It will cover getting access to the system through to receiving the goods. Register here. Grant Writing - Grant Application Budgets When: 26 October 2021, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Grant funding is often needed to enable research to be undertaken. Winning research grants is competitive and hard where the budget is a critical part of the grant application. This session will cover all of the basics you need to know when getting started with grant application budgets. Register here. Data Manipulation and Visualisation in R When: 26-27 October 2021, 9:30am - 12:30pm Do you have a good knowledge of the basic concepts and techniques in R and want to level up? In this workshop, you will learn how to use popular packages to manipulate, explore and get insights from your data, and how to visualise the results. Register here. Social Media Platforms for Researchers When: 28 October 2021, 10:30am - 11:30am There is a huge range of social media platforms and other online sites that researchers can use to tell their research stories. In this seminar, we will take a look at many different social media platforms and how a researcher can best use each one within their communications network. We also cover several sites that will take content (blogs, podcasts and videos) from researchers and distribute them to large audiences. Register here.
