Working within a prison at Ara Poutama Aotearoa, one of the things you’ll soon learn are the different units at your site.
We have a range of units around the country, based on different security classifications or specialist areas. These include youth units, cultural units, drug treatment units and self-care units.
One of our specialist units, offered at each of our women’s prisons, is our Mothers with Babies unit.
Mothers with Babies units offer mothers in prison who meet criteria the opportunity to care for their child up until the age of 24 months, within a bespoke unit in the prison. The unit is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment that builds and maintains a positive attachment between mothers and their babies.
For Mother's Day last month, 1 News visited a Mothers with Babies unit and spoke with Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility's Prison Director about the unit, as well as a mother residing there.

Call for art engages men at Invercargill Prison
A competition held by Invercargill Prison has inspired men from across the prison to create artwork for the health centre. The artworks created a lot of conversation, with the men coming to the unit proud to see their work on the walls.
