Backcountry Lodges of BC Association logo

Hello from the BLBCA

I am concerned with the number of avalanche incidents that have occurred so far this winter. At least 25 people have been killed in avalanches in the USA this year alone, more than the 23 who died all of last winter. BC has also experienced a significant number of incidents, some reported, many more not. Unfortunately some of them ended with good people losing their lives, or being severely injured.

I spend a significant amount of time in the backcountry teaching avalanche courses. Some of  the behaviour I have witnessed is hard to understand, certain backcountry users are putting themselves and others at unnecessary risk. We know that our SAR volunteers and other emergency responders are working overtime in order to try and keep up with the number of incidents that they are asked to deal with.

If you are venturing out to enjoy BC's beautiful backcountry, please be prepared and be respectful of the environment you will be engaging with. BC AdventureSmart and Avalanche Canada, amongst others, provide many resources which, if understood and employed, will help you more safely enjoy your next backcountry adventure.

Take good care.

Sincerely, Brad Harrison                                                                                    Executive Director, Backcountry Lodges of BC Association
