Generic versions of dapagliflozin have entered the market after a court ruling invalidated AstraZeneca’s patent for the SGLT2 inhibitor. The UK Court of Appeal has dismissed AstraZeneca’s challenge to a previous High Court ruling, upholding the decision to invalidate the company’s patent and supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) for its type 2 diabetes treatment dapagliflozin (Forxiga). A new subtype of diabetes has been identified in children and young people in sub-Saharan Africa. The new finding, published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology and funded by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), challenges the global understanding of diabetes in young people. New research has identified a growing confidence among UK nurses and midwives in supporting people with diabetes using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technologies, but not so much hybrid closed-loop (HCL) systems. While the widespread adoption of CGM is now underpinned by relatively high staff confidence and training access, HCL implementation remains inconsistent, particularly outside of specialist diabetes teams, a national online survey has revealed. Leicester Diabetes Centre has launched an updated version of its Insulin Education Toolkit, developed to support healthcare professionals delivering safe and effective insulin therapy across the UK. Last published and updated in 2018, the Toolkit has now been refreshed for 2025 to reflect the latest NICE guidance and clinical best practice.
