Click here 23 March 2023 AGRS e-NewsMessage from the Deputy Dean of Graduate Studies As part of the Alliance formed between the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and the University of Adelaide, both institutions offer a prestigious joint PhD program that began in 2015 in the area of Biosciences (School of Agriculture, Food and Wine) and has currently 31 students enrolled across all faculties from both Adelaide and Nottingham. Adelaide-based students in the joint PhD program have supervisors in Adelaide and Nottingham and spend at minimum 12 months working alongside their Nottingham supervisors. PhD projects can be developed in any of the three Themes of the Alliance’s activities: Innovative Health, Sustainable Futures and Global Food Systems. Students interested in applying to the joint PhD program in any of the 4 scholarship rounds held each year should discuss this with their Honours supervisors and check the Research Degree Projects page for projects offered through the Alliance. Supervisors looking to develop a project should contact the respective Theme Lead, who will identify and introduce potential supervisors at Nottingham. An approved Study Away application, and the associated registration with Study Overseas, ensures that you can access the University’s travel insurance (see Research Student Handbook page 89) and if there is an incident or natural disaster at the location where you have travelled the University can ensure you have any assistance needed. 2023 Westpac Future Leaders ScholarCongratulations to our latest Westpac Future Leader Harry Spurrier. Harry aims to explore teams, culture, and workplace environments and how these can be improved to facilitate the employment of people with disability. The focus for his PhD will be how we can facilitate change to communication and confidence through unique solutions such as inter team digital communication, and building confidence with Fulbright Scholarship PhD candidate Ali Gill has just embarked on a nine month Fulbright Scholarship experience at the University of California, Berkeley as a visiting researcher. NEW Internship Opportunities with various Governmental Departments and in France! The Government of South Australia has partnered with Paris-based energy company Neoen to create six internship opportunities. Learn more here and apply before 31 March 2023. The Department of Energy and Mining (DEM) requires a PhD student to undertake a study on heavy vehicle movements and how South Australia will be impacted by a change to electric or hydrogen fuelled heavy duty vehicles. The Department for Environment and Water (DEW) requires various PhD students to undertake research and development activities related to computer science; ecological models, marine biodiversity, environmental and social science, climate change and water; built heritage/economic modelling; biodiversity/economics and policy. Learn more here Postgraduate Scholarship OpportunitiesThe Adelaide Graduate Research School maintains a searchable database of available scholarship opportunities (both full scholarships and supplementary scholarships), funded by both the University of Adelaide and external funding bodies. While the majority of available scholarships are awarded as part of the standard admission and scholarship rounds for domestic and international students, some are awarded at different times throughout the year, and may have a separate application process. Possingham Supplementary Scholarship The Possingham Supplementary Scholarship supports postgraduate Higher Degree by Research students studying in the area of environmental sustainability. Environmental sustainability is defined in the broadest possible sense, and is open to applicants from any discipline (including but not exclusive to: engineering, law, mathematics, all the sciences, the social sciences and the arts) as long as the work has the potential to deliver a positive environmental outcome. Applications open on 1 April 2023 and close on 14 May 2023. Ian Wilson Liberal Research Supplementary Scholarship The Ian Wilson Liberal Research Supplementary Scholarship is available to HDR students undertaking postgraduate research which will lead to sound analysis and conclusions for reform capable of practical application and advocacy in Australia. The award is valued at $5,000 per annum for up to 3 years (tenure varies). Applicants must hold a major scholarship. For details regarding eligibility and how to apply, see further information.
