Reminder: Share Your Voice for Healing and Growing

As a part of the School of Medicine's strategic plan to design and implement an anti-racism educational curriculum, the Actionable Education Initiative (AEI) subcommittee on anti-racism is asking the SOM community to share a story or experience influenced by difference.

Submissions can include stories of microaggressions, discrimination, harm, threat of harm, processing, healing, or allyship. The de-identified stories will inform educational interventions and policies to help eradicate bias and injustice within our institution.

Please note, that if you do not wish to officially report any harm at this time, please keep your submissions free of identifying information, as our team members are mandatory reporters. We hold the utmost respect for your discretion and do not discourage you from reporting someone who has committed harm to you. Additionally, Emory University's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offer a variety of programs, services, and resources to promote emotional, behavioral, collegiate, and workplace health.

Spotlight: Summer Undergraduate Program in Renal Research

Kudos to the Division of Renal Medicine on another great summer with their Summer Undergraduate Program in Emory Renal Research (SUPERR) cohort! After ten weeks of hands-on training, research, and mentorship at Emory, these students presented the culmination of their research at the National Institute of Health's Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium. Outstanding jobs to these future scientists and physicians!

Thank you to SUPERR's principal investigators, Jason Cobb, MD, and Jeanie Park, MD, for their hard work in leading this program for the eleventh year. Recruitment for 2025 will begin this December. If you know someone who might be a good fit, please encourage them to apply!

SUPERR promotes an appreciation for the study of kidney, urology, and hematologic (KUH) diseases among undergraduate students who are interested in furthering their scientific research and could be encouraged to pursue a career in biomedical scientific research. Early exposure of undergraduate researchers to these exciting areas of study will give promising students first-hand experience in laboratory methods to answer questions that directly affect human health and disease. The goal is to foster sustained interest in KUH diseases, thereby increasing the number of students applying to PhD, MD, and dual degree programs and increasing the cadre of scientists in the biomedical workforce studying these topics in the future.

General Internal Medicine celebrates the retirement of long-term faculty member, Clyde Partin, MD

The Division of General Internal Medicine recently celebrated the retirement and career of long-term faculty member, Clyde Partin, Jr. MD. Dr. Partin is retiring after an extraordinary 32-year career on the Emory faculty. An Emory alumnus (78C, 83M, 83MR), Dr. Partin practically grew up on Emory’s campus, where his father Clyde “Doc” Partin served on the Emory faculty for over 50 years.

Clyde Partin Jr. returned to Emory after serving as a staff physician and flight surgeon for the U.S. Air Force. He was hired by Dr. Paul Seavey and later was instrumental in the creation of the Seavey Comprehensive Clinic. He also founded Emory’s Special Diagnostic Clinic. Dr. David Roberts, Director of the Seavey Clinic, describes Partin as “the heart and soul of the Seavey Clinic – a trusted and revered doctor who is loved and looked up to by his colleagues, patients, staff, and students. He’s one of the most highly sought-after and respected clinicians in the Southeast.”

Dr. Partin has been recognized with many teaching and service awards throughout his career, most recently the Emory Primary Care Consortium’s Career Achievement in Primary Care and the Emory Medical Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

Congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Partin on his retirement!
