[St. Jude Church, Kapolei (with Installation of Pastor), St. Anthony of Padua Church, Kailua (with Installation of Pastor)]
I recently had a conversation with a gentleman who has been a Protestant all his life but is now seriously considering entering the Catholic Church. He has struggled with some of the doctrines, but after studying them, he now understands and accepts them. But he did offer some observations of his experience of visiting many Catholic parishes as a “seeker.” He mentioned, for example, that in very few parishes was he welcomed by anyone. Neither an usher nor a parishioner noticed that he was a newcomer and offered him a word of welcome. He also mentioned that, since he is not familiar with the ritual of a Catholic Mass, he has only found a couple of people who noticed his discomfort and tried to give him a brief orientation by guiding him discreetly through the ritual. In most places, he was simply left guessing.
He obviously saw things that the rest of us can be blind to, since we are so accustomed to what we do and how we do it. I appreciated his honesty, and it was very eye-opening. Read more...

School is back in session for Paulist seminarian Chris Malano, but this academic year is much more than just his final year of theological studies toward a master of divinity degree.
It also marks his sixth year of formation with the Paulist Fathers, the last one before he is ordained a priest.
On Aug. 31, Malano will make his final, lifetime promise to the Paulist Fathers; a week later, he will be ordained to the transitional diaconate.
He will spend a year as a transitional deacon in Washington, D.C., where he has been studying at The Catholic University of America. Then — “God willing,” Malano said — next May he will be ordained a priest at the Paulist Fathers Motherhouse in New York City. Read more...

HOPE Services Hawaii Aids Houseless Impacted by Natural Disasters

From the Office for Social Ministry
Recently when Hurricane Hone threatened to impact Hawaii, more than two dozen staff members of HOPE Services Hawaii sprang into action. In groups of two or three, they set out to help houseless residents as 18 inches of rain fell in some areas of East Hawai‘i, flooding roads in the Ka‘ū District and the Bayfront area in Hilo. These “off-duty” HOPE staff continued their efforts throughout the weekend. “Some of our colleagues signed up to come straight off a 12-hour shelter shift, to do another four-hour shift out in the community,” said HOPE Services Hawai’i CEO Brandee Menino, expressing her sincere appreciation for the compassion and determination of many to ensure vulnerable people were safe. In total, the HOPE Services Hawai’i outreach teams helped more than a dozen people in Hilo, including a 74-year-old Kupuna who was struggling to survive on a muddy cliff, secure temporary
shelter and later permanent housing. According to HOPE Services Hawai’i staff, about 30 other people chose to stay outside and were offered supplies and directions, in case they changed their minds. Read more...

Catechetical Sunday, Sep 15

Catechetical Sunday - September 15, 2024
"Lord, when did we see you hungry" Matthew 25:37
The theme reflects our call to missionary discipleship. As St John Paul II reminded us: The universal call to holiness is closely linked to the universal call to mission. Every member of the faithful is called to holiness and to mission. We are called to be eucharist by word and action to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Our times cry out for this kind of holiness, one inflamed by the ardent determination to bring as many of our brothers and sisters as possible to Christ. (USCCB)

ʻOhana Mass, Sep 28
|
|
| |
Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024
at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
c. 15 BC
Feast – September 8
Today’s Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated exactly nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, just as Christmas is celebrated nine months after the Church remembers the Incarnation of the Son of God on the Solemnity of the Annunciation. The birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of three liturgical feasts in which we celebrate a birth: Christmas, the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, and the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Only the three most consequential figures in the Bible receive the honor of a liturgical celebration to commemorate their births. Read more...
