Grant Spotlight

This issue’s C4 Center Spotlight shines on two Center affiliate members from the Division of Cardiology: Dr. Jared Magnani, MD, MSc, Associate Professor of Medicine and Dr. Matthew Muldoon, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine.

Drs. Magnani and Muldoon recently were awarded a 5-year NIH/NHLBI R01 grant to support their project, Multilevel mobile health program to improve rural hypertension. This randomized clinical trial will evaluate the effect of a smartphone-based home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) program on BP, antihypertensive medication adherence, HPBM adherence, and self-reported outcomes among rural adults with poorly-controlled hypertension. The intervention targets multiple domains of adherence by providing each patient with a personalized curriculum to promote and support BP monitoring, hypertension education, medication adherence, non-pharmacologic strategies for hypertension management, preparation for clinical encounters, and enhanced problem-solving and engagement. Study participants will be randomized to receive the intervention or enhanced usual care and followed for 12 months. The study’s primary outcome is change in systolic and diastolic BP over 6 months between intervention and enhanced usual care arms; secondary outcomes include change in adherence to antihypertensive medications and patient-reported outcomes over 6 and 12 months between the two arms. Recruitment is expected to begin in mid-2023.

Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Research on the Health of Women of Understudied, Underrepresented and Underreported (U3) Populations. Open date: 9/8/2022 link

“The Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) announces the availability of administrative supplements to support research highlighting health inequities among women in the United States who are understudied, underrepresented and underreported (U3) in biomedical research. Robust studies exploring sex and gender influences and social determinants of health are needed to reduce inequities. The proposed research must address at least one objective from strategic goals 1, 2, or 3 of the “2019-2023 Trans-NIH Strategic Plan for Women’s Health Research, Advancing Science for the Health of Women.”"
