Travelers Rank SFO Airport Staff as the Best in North AmericaAirport tops SkyTrax 2018 Passengers’ Choice Awards for the second time in five years For the second time in less than 5 years, SFO has been named the top airport in North America for customer service. In the SkyTrax Passengers’ Choice Awards for 2018, SFO was named “Best Airport Staff in North America”, followed by Denver and Vancouver airports. SFO also received the top honor in the SkyTrax Passengers’ Choice Awards for 2015. “The SkyTrax survey is the global benchmark for airport excellence, and we are truly honored to have travelers rank our staff as the best in North America,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “Our goal is to be an exceptional airport, and the amazing team of people at SFO are our greatest asset. The 2018 SkyTrax award is the ultimate validation of their attitude, commitment, and dedication.” “We congratulate San Francisco International Airport for their success in winning this important customer satisfaction award for 2018, the Staff Service awards being a very special honor for airports,” said SkyTrax CEO Edward Plaisted. “The award recognizes the combined quality of staff service (attitude, friendliness and efficiency) delivered across front-line positions at San Francisco International Airport. It includes staff working for Customer Help/Info counters, Immigration and Security staff, shops, food & beverage outlets - in fact, all customer facing staff.” The SkyTrax survey, conducted annually, is considered the preeminent measure of airport quality in the world. The absence of any sponsorship, payment or external influence ensures that the results are fully impartial and credible. As a result, the SkyTrax World Airport Awards are regarded as the most prestigious accolades for the global airport industry, voted for by air travelers in the largest worldwide airport customer satisfaction survey. For the 2018 awards, SkyTrax compiled over 13.7 million survey questionnaires completed by over 100 different customer nationalities from August 2017 to February 2018. The survey covered 550 airports worldwide, evaluating the travel experience from a variety of factors, including check-in, arrivals, departures, transfers, shopping, security and immigration.

Isamu Noguchi: Inside and OutThe American sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-88) is one of the essential visionaries of the twentieth century. Working across a wide range of disciplines with a deep sense of social purpose for more than six decades, the artist developed a uniquely open-ended, inclusive, and forward-looking perspective on global culture. Isamu Noguchi: Inside and Out, traces a recurring impulse in his work—an irresistible compulsion to make three-dimensional sculptures from two-dimensional materials. This exhibition features two installations representing interior and exterior landscapes. They are drawn from Noguchi's last two forays in sheet metal kirigami (cutting and folding), combined with his most successful and ubiquitous expansion of the practice of sculpture—his electrified paper and bamboo Akari lanterns. The galvanized steel pieces in the exterior environment, made from the same material as guardrails and lampposts, were conceived as a series of editions to answer the great demand for outdoor sculpture by him with works that are, like Akari, relatively lightweight, inexpensive, playful, and unpretentious. In the interior environment, a crowd of Akari join a related body of work in cut and folded bronze plate designed to winkingly play off of the perceived preciousness and self-seriousness of bronze sculpture. All objects are from The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum. This exhibition is located pre-security in the International Terminal Main Hall Departures Lobby. It is on view to all Airport visitors from April 14, 2018, to January 6, 2019. There is no charge to view the exhibition.
“Working at SFO” Event Engages Local Educators and Community PartnersAirport welcomes Bay Area school district officials, high school principals, college professors for insight into career opportunities at SFO SFO, in partnership with the Bay Area Council’s “Workforce of the Future” initiative, hosted local educators and community partners to showcase career opportunities at the Airport. The event, held on January 18, 2018, was titled “Working at SFO”, and featured an overview of airport facilities, and a career expo including airlines, airport employers, and small business owners at SFO. The goal of the event was to inform local educators and community partners about the diverse career pathways that are available at SFO, and how to access these opportunities for students and youth participants. SFO will hold a similar event in Spring 2018 for students and youth to showcase the workforce pipelines available at an airport. “Our goal is to be an exceptional Airport, in service to our communities,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “Through our Economic and Community Development team, we’re engaging educators and leaders in our region more than ever before, to highlight the wide variety of career opportunities that exist at SFO. We’re proud to host this event, and hope that it provides valuable insights to participants.” SFO’s Economic and Community Development group works to create and enhance partnerships that meet the intersecting workforce development needs of the Airport's communities, including, but not limited to, the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF), neighboring cities and counties, the educational community, community-based organizations and private businesses. The Airport’s Business & Employment Center provides sourcing services to over 100 Airport tenants, plans and executes large and small scale hiring events, and provides career guidance and direct placement services to more than 1,000 youth and adult job seekers annually. For more than 25 years, SFO has hired college students and participated in internship programs offered by the CCSF. Airport-specific programs began with the creation of the Employment and Community Partnerships department in 1997, with the goal of forging lasting connections between local communities and ongoing career placement at SFO. On its 20th anniversary, the Airport welcomed a record 153 interns for the summer of 2017, covering high school students, transitional age youth, college students, and trades. In its most recent economic impact report, SFO directly accounted for over 42,800 jobs at the Airport. For more information about employment opportunities at SFO, visit careers.
SFO Wins Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for 2017Airport receives highest environmental honor in the state of California SFO has been named a winner of the 2017 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) for its industry-leading efforts to make air travel greener. SFO was recognized the category of Sustainable Practices, Communities or Facilities. The GEELA is the highest environmental honor in the state of California, honoring organizations that have demonstrated exceptional leadership in conserving natural resources, protecting the environment, building partnerships, and strengthening the state economy. SFO has set a goal to become the first airport in the world to achieve “triple zero”; zero carbon, zero waste to landfill, and zero net energy usage (unless from renewable sources). In 2016, SFO was awarded Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation by Airports Council International (ACI), becoming the first airport in California and only the second in North America certified at this level. The culmination of the program is Level 3+ accreditation, recognizing an airport that has achieved carbon neutrality. Despite its status as one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States, SFO has achieved significant success in reducing its carbon footprint. Since 1990, the Airport has reduced greenhouse gas emissions from airport-controlled operations by 33%, already far exceeding a City and County of San Francisco goal of 25% reduction by 2017. SFO also collaborated with airlines and airport tenants, reducing their emissions by about 78,000 metric tons in FY2016 by supplying preconditioned air and 400 Hz power to aircraft parked at the gates while deplaning and enplaning passengers. Recycling and composting efforts during the same period resulted in a further mitigation of 7,328 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. SFO has also reduced energy consumption by almost 11,000 megawatt-hours per year and improved 558 acres of wetlands throughout the Bay Area. Reduction strategies have included:
