A little over 10 years ago, after the Diocese of Honolulu’s With Grateful Hearts capital campaign, every parish was given the opportunity to focus more intently on stewardship.
At the time, Father Konelio “Lio” Faletoi, the pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kailua-Kona, knew he wanted to grow in his understanding of the spirituality of stewardship, so he began taking every opportunity he could to learn more.
“We were just coasting as a parish,” Father Faletoi recalled. “We were just surviving, and I knew there was more we could do to be a vibrant parish.”
Father Faletoi took the initiative and educated himself. When one of his brother priests, Father Stephen Macedo, told him about a stewardship conference in Wichita, Kansas, hosted by Catholic Stewardship Consultants — an organization committed to developing disciples of Christ through the practice of stewardship — he decided to go. Reflecting on "One Ohana"

(WiPhotoHunter / Shutterstock.com)
From the Office for Social Ministry
God himself is a community, that perfect community of love, three persons in one God and that is what we are called to be. We are never to be alone. We know that we are part of an Ohana –– that God is always a part of that family. God is always the One who calls us into that family.” - Bishop Larry Silva, from the One Ohana video series on the Sacraments.
Bishop Larry Silvaʻs 75th birthday in August provides an opportunity to reflect upon his years of loving service witnessing to Jesus in the Diocese of Honolulu. Over the last decade, the Office for Social Ministry has been blessed to participate in the production of the diocese’s award-winning “One Ohana” video series on the sacraments, which expressed some of Bishopʻs Larry inspiring pastoral reflections. This Talk Story column will highlight some of his many memorable quotes from these videos.
The first of the “One Ohana” videos featured the sacrament of Baptism, in which Bishop Larry eloquently lifted up the vital connection of faith and family. He compared the joyful gift of a child’s birth to the experience of God’s beauty. Read more...

Maryknoll Sister Prepares for Final Vows
By Celia K. Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald
Maryknoll Sister Felista Wanzagi was gently told she was too young when she first expressed her intention to join the Maryknoll Sisters.
Sister Wanzagi was just 11 years old, after all, when she approached the Maryknoll religious in her hometown in Tanzania, a country in east Africa.
Sister Wanzagi eventually realized her ambition and now, at age 38, is the youngest sister in the Maryknoll order. She was assigned to Hawaii last year but only arrived this past January as she prepares to make her final vows in 2025. Read more...

Please send your request o help our keiki in need to coats@kofchawaii.org. Be sure to include: number of jackets needed, size, and if it's for a girl or boy. Your KOC members across the state of Hawaii will be fund raising for these jackets, and they will be free to for our keiki in need. Please help them if you can with your generous donations.

"Making the Most of Moments" Seminar, Aug 10-17
|
|
|
Maui: Saturday, August 10 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
St. Anthony of Padua Church, Wailuku
Kauai: Wednesday, August 14 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Immaculate Conception Church, Lihue
Hawaii: Friday, August 16 at 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
St. Michael the Archangel Church, Kailua-Kona
Oahu: Saturday, August 17 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
St. Stephen Diocesan Center, Kaneohe
This session with presenters Paul & Sarah Jarzembowski will guide participants and facilitate dialogue around unpacking “moments of return” throughout the year, such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter, as well as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. We will also explore some less-obvious “moments” that reveal an overlooked abundance of occasions and opportunities upon which pastoral leaders, families, and concerned churchgoers can build. As Pope Francis notes, these “moments” can offer people “wellsprings of new life,” especially when we respond with intentionality, pastoral care, and a missionary spirit.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola
1491–1556
Memorial – July 31
Íñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola (Ignatius in Latin) was born at the Castle of Loyola in the municipality of Azpeitia, in modern-day Gipuzkoa, Spain. He was the youngest of thirteen children. Shortly after his birth, his mother died, and he was cared for by a local woman named Maria. When he was seven, his father died, and he was sent to live with a local noble family where he fulfilled the duties of a page, introducing him to the idea of knighthood and military service. As a result, Ignatius became an enthusiastic man who dreamed of being a great military officer. Captivated by thoughts of worldly honor and glory, he became a soldier around the age of seventeen. For the next twelve years he fought in many battles and advanced in rank. In 1521, at the age of thirty, Ignatius was wounded in battle and bedridden for months as his wounded leg healed.
