William A. Hall at Andrew Edlin Gallery, NY

until October 22, 2017

California car culture and bucolic psychedelic landscapes meet in William A. Hall’s remarkable drawings. Living as a homeless person in Los Angeles for 18 years and using old Cadillacs, a Buick and most recently a Dodge for his art studios, Hall would sit in the driver’s seat drawing sometimes for 12 hours at a stretch every day. See his car drawings created between at Andrew Edlin Gallery in Hall's first gallery exhibition.

Featured Artist:
Herbert Singleton (1945–2007)

He carved walking sticks and “voodoo protection” stumps for friends before fortuitously embracing bas-relief as his primary form of creative expression. Singelton readily confronted hot-button issues most people avoid, such as race, religion and politics. On boldly carved and painted salvaged panels, he both skewered and exalted his life and times. He appended works with text, railing against hypocrisy while revealing keen insight into the socio-economic limitations imposed upon many in the American South. Singleton matter-of-factly addressed racism and the ravaging effects of self-destructive indulgences, such as sex, drugs and gambling. His biblically-inspired works point out our seeming inability to meet the standards we set for others and his festive works pay tribute to New Orleans culture.

Herbert Singleton, an artist from Algiers, Louisiana, overcame many hardships, some compounded by his own misdeeds. He dropped out of school at the age of twelve and worked a number of odd jobs before finding steady employment as a carpenter. During his tough life, he survived a near-fatal shooting, endured years of drug abuse and, cumulatively, spent nearly 14 years in prison. He first derived meaningful income from artistic endeavours in the early 1980s.

Herbert Singleton is featured in our Outsider Art Sourcebook and in Raw Vision 40, both currently half price!
