Autumn...

The grass at the north-south ends of the rink has worn thin and has acquired a suntan.  Fred, the groundsman, is finding it harder and harder to iron out the pock-marks and he has ordered soil for winter top dressing.  But it is a sublime time of the year.  There is a gentleness, a mellowness in the air.  The sunny windless days are so gorgeous they could have been designed by a computer.  Just like life itself, nature in autumn is not quite so contrary or desperate.

Junior's time to shine

Papatoetoe Hunters Corner

This year has seen several 1-5 Year (Junior) players challenge for winning honours at the Club.

Coach Winston Leaver was impressed with their results, especially so soon after our newly implemented training programme. Our Senior members have played a big part in encouraging and promoting 1-5 Year players into their teams for Champs and Open tournaments - adding to their development and results. This is especially timely as the 1-5 Year numbers swell at the Club.

The 1-5 Year Singles title was hotly contested with many one-point wins, the eventual winner was Prakash Ranchhod taking winning honours. Runner-up was Shivan Padayachi.

The following week, Shivan went one better!  He won 1-5 Year Pairs with his son Avi . The runners-up were Vai Gafa and Leroy Thompson.

Shivan Padayachi and Carl Martin (already part of the winning champ Triples team) then put a few senior teams to the sword to secure the Champ Pairs title - much to the delight of our Club Coach.  Winston was so proud of the results, "it is the Junior's time to shine."

Club President, John Clark said, "the 1-5 Year swell of confidence and ability is just fantastic and the future looks very bright for the Club.  Long may it continue."

Pairs and Fours champs

Epsom Bowling Club
26-27 February 2022

It was great to see a successful 1-5 Year Pairs Championship last Saturday at Epsom Bowls, with all games keenly contested.

The winners were Loretta Ross and Margaret Dotchin in the Women's event, Jeff Amadia and Paul Ghezzi taking out the Men's title.

The final of our Men's Fours Championship was played on Sunday. Colin Boyle’s team had two lives and Roger Sutton's team with one life. At the end of 14 ends with the score at 15-14 to Colin’s team and holding a shot on the 15th, Roger with his last bowl, played an amazing bowl and picked up two shots to win the game 16-15 - thus taking a life off their opponents. Both teams now with a life each, a deciding game needed to be played.   There were exceptional bowls played by both teams. The game was keenly contested and finished at 12-12 after 15 ends. A deciding extra end had to be played. Great bowling again from both teams.

The winners were Colin Boyle, Junior Ngavaeae, Jeff Amadia and KJ Lark (pictured below) and the runners-up were Roger Sutton, Dave Vince, Dave (Flash) Gordon and Arthur Frankham-Burgess.

Pairs & Triples

Pt Chevalier Bowling Club
26-27 February 2022

No one managed to come through unscathed in the Mixed Pairs on Saturday 26 February.   In a cut-throat competition, the two remaining unbeaten sides both lost their final games.  This meant a countback of ends was needed to determine the winner.

Congratulations to the victorious pairing of Kevin Morris and Jo McKenna and runners-up Graham Edwards and Phil Russell.

Congratulations to our 2021-22 Mixed Triples winners - Alex Reed (S), Stephen Campbell and Jenny Stockford. The trio was unbeaten at the end of play.

Congrats also to Keith Earl (S), Chrissy Pegg and Henry Fane. They bounced back from their first-round loss, to win their remaining matches, and claim second place.

The Consistency Singles was played over the weekend of 19-20 February.  The scoring system in Consistency Singles means there are 10 points up for grabs at every end: 4 for the closest, 3 for the second shot, 2 for the third and 1 for the fourth. A kill means 10 points away.

The final four were Stephen Campbell with two lives, Dale Knight, Keith Earl and Kevin Morris with one each.  Stephen proved too strong for Dale in one semi-final, whilst the Keith vs Kevin match came down to the wire.

With the score tied at 95 all, Keith played a pressure last bowl to secure the win, and end the dogmatic comeback from Kevin.

The final saw Stephen leap out to an early lead 47-13. The game was evenly paced from then on, but the damage was already done.

Congratulations to Stephen who stood out as the player to beat all weekend, and Keith Earl for a fine effort.

Making history

Kohimarama Bowls
26 February 2022

Our gentleman bowler mascot was introduced to the club on 26 February, right in time for our first-ever Men’s Championship Fours.  When Mission Bay Men’s Bowling Club folded in 2015, many of the members were welcomed by Kohimarama.  In 2013, Mission Bay Women's Bowling Club became Kohimarama Bowling Club, accepting male memberships and other clubs in the area.  While Kohi has dedicated male bowlers, several playing on rep squads, it has nott been until this year that we could field a Men's Fours contest.  With club membership currently at 40% male, it was the right time to reconsider our garden mascot playing Mixed Pairs.

Men's Championship Fours winners: Mark Compton, Trevor Kent, Ross Forrester, Richard Fox
Runners up: Robert Collins, Charles Martin, Jim Jericevich, Ian Patterson.

St Heliers Bowling Club member and Eastern Bays bowling personality Roger Seaton kindly donated the gentleman bowler to Kohimarama. Roger acquired the figure at the closing of the Mission Bay Men’s Bowling Club to spruce him up for his conservatory.
