Bishop's Homily for the Sixth Sunday of Easter

[St. Philomena Church, Honolulu (Confirmation & First Communion)]

I remember when I was about 10 years old, walking back from school alone. (In those days, 10 year-olds walking alone was not an unusual thing!) Some bigger boys were bullying me, and one spat on me. When I arrived home and told my father, he put me in the car, found the boys and gave them such a scolding that they must have thought twice before bullying anyone else. My father was my advocate.

I recall having to make a very difficult decision that I knew would bring me a lot of criticism. I told a good friend about my struggle with the decision, and he encouraged me to do the right thing, even if it was going to be difficult. He was my advocate. Read more...

Priest-to-be Drawn by God’s Mercy to Holy Service

Bishop Larry Silva will ordain Arrion Rosales-Llantos a priest at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. (Photo courtesy of Dann Ebina)

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

Arrion Rosales-Llantos is nervous. In a week he will take the biggest step of his life. On May 19 he will be ordained a priest.

“To say that the priesthood is a profound commitment to God and his people is an understatement,” he told the Hawaii Catholic Herald last week. “I know that as a human being, I have many faults, but God transforms us through his grace and makes use of our quirks for holy service.”

“It truly is an incredible manifestation of God’s mercy that he would choose me to serve him at the altar and to bring his presence to the people through the sacraments,” he said by email.

So that apprehension quickly turns into excitement.

“Ultimately, I am excited because I am looking forward to participating in the ministry of Jesus Christ through the sacraments, bringing healing, hope, and consolation to those whom God sends my way.” Read more...

Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church

From the Office for Social Ministry

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners have established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “‘Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana. However this month, Mary Star of the Sea will celebrate the ‘Ohana Mass this coming Saturday May 27, 2023.

Saint of the Week

Saint Isidore
c. 1070–c. 1130
Memorial – May 15

Saint Isidore, whom we honor today, is often called Isidore the Laborer, or Isidore the Farmer. He was an ordinary man, husband, and father who lived a humble and simple life working the fields for a landowner. His extraordinary faith, by which he always sought first the Kingdom of God, sets for us an excellent example of achieving extraordinary sanctity in the ordinary grind of daily work. Read more...
