Registration opens on Monday, March 1. Participants will join teams of up to 10 people and work together to unlock 14 Emory destinations throughout the 6-week challenge. Dr. Rogers Retires ![]() ![]() Congratulations to Dr. Phillip Rogers on his retirement! He has been precepting for Emory School of Medicine since 1998 and won multiple teaching awards over the years. Dr. Rogers was loved by his students for his empathetic and excellent teaching. He also created a highly effective model of interprofessional education that has benefitted hundreds of learners at Emory. The “Rogers Teaching Model” allowed Dr. Rogers to precept groups of up to 10 students, including PA, medical, nursing, and nurse practitioner students. He will be missed by his colleagues and his students. The pandemic precluded us from celebrating Dr. Rogers in person, but he was presented with a book full of testimonies and memories from students that’s he’s precepted throughout his career. Over the years, Dr. Rogers collected many glowing evaluations from his students. The innovative work of Drs. Paul DeSandre and Ali John Zarrabi, as funded by the Emory Imagine, Innovate, and Impact (I3) Education Award, continues. Now underway is The Art of Palliation, a three-part art museum-based experiential curriculum designed to foster core palliative care clinical and team-based skills outside of the usual structures and hierarchies of the healthcare environment. The first session focuses on self-awareness through critical observation and active listening skills. The second session explores bias, cultural humility, mortality and meaning. The third session addresses empathy and the tolerance of uncertainty. The sessions run April – June. The next Quarterly meeting of the Art in Medicine workshop participants will take place on March 19th at the High Museum of Art.
******* Lal completes Congratulations to Dr. Ashima Lal for completing the 2020-21 Woodruff Health Educators Academy Teaching Fellowship. Dr. Lal and her cohort of 31 faculty and staff educators have been working together for the past 12 months to advance their teaching skills and offer quality instruction to their learners. The purpose of the SBM Diversity Institute for Emerging Leaders is to help early-career SBM members develop into effective, thoughtful leaders by fostering leadership skills and a deep understanding of the principles of diversity and inclusion. The department of Family and Preventive Medicine has a diversity, equity and inclusion initiative! This very important initiative is being led by Drs. Antonio Graham and Kimberly Curseen. Although it is in its infancy stage, a lot has been taking place on Monday nights at 5:00 pm. For example, once a month the newly formed DEI council meet to discuss the hot topics and not so hot topics to formulate the best practices and how to educate individuals concerning diversity, equity and inclusion. This dynamic council begun working in affinity groups to address pressing areas that surround diversity and inclusion. Once the ground work is laid, we will begin to engage, invite and solicit opinions and comments from our entire department! ****** Two of our Palliative Care colleagues, Dr. Kim Curseen and Dr. Chinonye Nnaji, were featured for Black History Month. As part of the School of Medicine's commitment to an inclusive environment at Emory, they have set a goal to build a culture that recognizes the contributions of all individuals – including those who come from underrepresented groups. While the SOM will recognize the work of our diverse community year-round, they are organizing initial efforts through focused affinity month celebrations to promote sharing, awareness, and learning. Details above. ![]() Application for National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine New Voices 2021 Cohort A diverse cohort of 18 mid-career experts will have the opportunity to bring their collective ideas about critical and emerging interdisciplinary issues to the work of the National Academies. During the course of the two year program, members are given an opportunity work within an extremely diverse cohort of outstanding leaders to collectively advance their ideas about the future of science, engineering and medicine. By design, the cohort's objectives are self-defined at the start of each program cycle. The two-year program runs from mid-2021 to 2023.
