Bishop's Homily for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

(Jacob Lund / Shutterstock.com)

[Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu]

Children, happy Fathers Day to you! Yes, happy Fathers Day to you because, after all, if it were not for children there would be no fathers, right? Mothers, happy Fathers Day to you as well, because -- you guessed it -- without mothers there would be no fathers! And, of course, a very happy Fathers Day to all our fathers! You are much appreciated in all you do.

Did you notice I mentioned the three kinds of persons who are needed to make all of these people what they are? And, I think, this helps us to reflect on the beauty of today’s feast, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are the primordial community of love, because, even though they are three distinct persons, they are one God. St. John tells us that “God is love,” and it is the very nature of love to be in relationship with others. Read more...

Serving Puts God, Faith at the Forefront

Derek Salis is very involved at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Ewa Beach and loves his Catholic faith — but he admits it hasn’t always been that way. Previously, Sundays were for sleeping in, golfing and whatever else he wanted to do.

Salis is retired from the U.S. Air Force — he and his wife, Lyn, lived in Colorado Springs in the early 1990s. It was there, at Holy Apostles Church, where things started to change.

“I’d go to Mass sometimes to keep Lyn happy, but I wasn’t going regularly,” Salis said.

Some friends invited Salis to attend Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults classes. He surprised Lyn at the last minute by attending. Read more...

Opening the Borders of Our Hearts

(Alicia G. Monedero / Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

"At Pentecost, the doors of the Upper Room were opened because the Spirit opens borders… first of all, the Spirit opens borders in our hearts…the Spirit also opens borders in our relationship with others…and finally, the Spirit opens borders between peoples." - Pope Leo XIV Pentecost Homily 2025

In his first papal Pentecost homily to thousands of Jubilee Year pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV offered a stirring meditation on the Holy Spirit’s work in the world today—especially how the Spirit opens borders on three interconnected levels––within ourselves, with each other, and between peoples of different cultures: “The Spirit opens borders, first of all, in our hearts. He is the Gift that opens our lives to love. His presence breaks down our hardness of heart, our narrowness of mind, our selfishness, the fears that enchain us, and the narcissism that makes us think only of ourselves… The Spirit opens our interior borders, so that our lives can become places of welcome and refreshment.”

Just as in the first Pentecost, our new Holy Father calls on the Spirit to open the borders of our hearts and renew the fire of our faith by breaking down our inner walls of isolation and individualism and focus outward to others. Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Jun 28

Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Talks for Youth and Adults, May and June

Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays during June
at 6:00 p.m.
St. Michael the Archangel Church, Kailua-Kona

All are welcome to join these talks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-7pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kailua-Kona. These talks will be given by the missionary team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Hawai’i: Jonathan & Nazarena Stenger with their seven children, Fr. John Wadeson, Benjamin Paz a seminarian for the Diocese of Philadelphia, and Paulo Da Mata a seminarian for the Diocese of Brooklyn.

These talks are an announcement of the Good News where Christ has an answer to the difficult situations we experience and gives us the possibility of love and forgiveness. This itinerary of Catholic formation lived in small communities within the parish will help us to discover the richness of our baptism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1231 states that by its very nature infant baptism requires a post baptismal catechumenate. Not only is there a need for instruction after baptism but also for the necessary flowering of baptismal grace in personal growth.

For more information, please contact Jonathan and Nazarena Stenger at (808) 268-3993.

Saint of the Week

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga
1568–1591
Memorial - June 21

Luigi Gonzaga was the firstborn son of eight children, and the scion to a wealthy and noble inheritance. He was born into the Duchy of Mantua, modern-day northern Italy, which was ruled by his family, the princely House of Gonzaga. Luigi was the Italian version of his name; Aloysius was the Latin version. His father, Ferrante Gonzaga, was Governor of Milan, Viceroy of Sicily, and a general in the army of the Holy Roman Emperors Charles V and Philip II. As the oldest son, Luigi was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps through a military career. Ferrante began training Luigi as a soldier when Luigi was just four years old. Luigi’s mother, a devout Catholic, had different hopes for her son. Read more...
