Blair Dominates Auckland BC Junior COC Singles

By Paul Neazor

The Auckland Bowling Club Junior Singles Champ of Champs attracted a quality field of 70 players from across New Zealand, representing 12 centres from Kaitaia to Arrowtown. With many leading 1–5 Year players and centre representatives in action, a fiercely competitive weekend was expected.

Saturday’s qualifying rounds lived up to expectations, with numerous nail-biting contests and several 21-20 results highlighting the depth of the field. With more representative-standard players than places available for Sunday’s knockout stages, upsets were inevitable.

A key storyline was the strong showing from the women, with five progressing to the last 16 after only one reached Sunday’s play last year. By Sunday, seven centres remained represented as players battled for both the championship title and the newly introduced Plate competition.

As the finals progressed, Crawford Blair emerged as the standout performer, navigating a series of tough opponents with impressive consistency. The Plate competition was equally competitive, with close matches throughout.

In the Plate final, Fraema Akaruru-Teinaki held off a determined comeback from Paul Davison to secure a 21-15 victory.

The championship final saw Blair take on Debbie Bishop. Blair’s outstanding draw bowling and well-executed weighted shots proved decisive as he claimed a 21-11 win, completing a remarkable run of seven consecutive victories over quality opposition. His final three wins all came by the same scoreline, underlining his dominance.

The tournament was another outstanding success, thanks to the efforts of the host clubs, volunteers, and organisers who helped deliver a memorable weekend of bowls.
