Diversity in Healthcare Conference at Penn State

April 3, 2022

This message is sponsored by the Penn State Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Science, & Health and Human Development; Schreyer Honors College; Prehealth advising; and the Office of Educational Equity.

Alpha Epsilon Delta is hosting a Diversity in Healthcare Conference titled: Sourcing Solutions for Better Outcomes Tomorrow. This conference aims to engage undergraduate pre-health students in discussion and problem-solving regarding issues in our healthcare system. They would like to involve Senior Nursing Students like you as leaders during this conference.

Here you can leverage your curricular and clinical experiences thus far by facilitating meaningful conversations and problem solving among diverse groups of undergraduate students. This opportunity will serve to increase all participants’ awareness of and competency with these issues in an innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary model, ultimately preparing all participants for careers as patient advocates and leaders in healthcare. Additionally, all participants will receive certification from the Penn State College of Medicine.

We hope that you can express your interest in acting as a leader during this conference by filling out an Interest Form here: https://tinyurl.com/DHTInterestForm

HealthWorks Peer Health Educator Positions

HealthWorks, a peer health education outreach program in Health Promotion and Wellness, is currently recruiting student volunteers to become Peer Health Educators for the 2022 – 2023 academic year. The deadline for applications is March 4, 2022. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.

HealthWorks peer educators work to address college health issues at Penn State, including stress, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and sexual health.

Students have two different opportunities for promoting health among their peers:  1. One-on-one wellness services for students; and 2. Outreach and promotion through workshops and initiatives.  The one-on-one peer educators will meet individually with students to provide free wellness services.  The topics include stress and time management, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, sexual health and healthy relationships.

The outreach and promotion peer educators plan and implement various health promotion initiatives and efforts to encourage healthy lifestyle choices among Penn State students. Examples of HealthWorks initiatives include writing for the Healthy Penn State blog and Instagram, hosting Eating Disorder Awareness and Love Your Body week, creating healthy cooking videos, conducting minority health outreach tables, facilitating workshops on different health topics and providing HIV test counseling.

Students who apply and are accepted will receive training through a 3-credit course offered through the Department of Biobehavioral Health in Fall 2021. The course is designed to train peer health educators on health issues and health promotion theories and strategies for college students.

Volunteering in HealthWorks helps prepare students for careers in public health, allied health fields, nursing, nutrition, medicine, advertising and public relations.

Students can learn more about HealthWorks and apply online at https://studentaffairs.psu.edu/health-wellness/healthy-living/volunteer-experiences-health-and-wellness/healthworks.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail at promotinghealth@psu.edu or by phone at (814) 863-0461.  Thank you in advance for your help in our recruiting efforts.

AMCAS Choose Your Medical School (CYMS) Tool Now Available

We are pleased to announce the AMCAS Choose Your Medical School (CYMS) tool is now available to applicants within the AMCAS application. Only applicants with at least one (1) current acceptance will be able to see and use the tool.

The AAMC American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®) created this tool to support medical schools’ enrollment management processes and help applicants communicate their intentions about which medical schools they plan to attend. Schools will only be able to access information about their accepted and alternate-list (waitlist) applicants. Applicants should use the tool at the direction of the schools to which they have applied.
