After a two-year gap, the Christian Leadership Institute returned to St. Stephen Diocesan Center in Kaneohe.

CLI trains promising Catholic high schoolers in Hawaii to be leaders in their parishes. This year 24 students participated in the weeklong seminar from June 26 to July 1.

“I’m always so impressed with the growth of the participants as they attend the various workshops throughout the week,” said Lisa Gomes, the director of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, which organized the institute. “We experienced beautiful liturgies each evening and super fun socials, all planned by the participants.”

Fourteen adult team members helped lead the week, including vocations director Father Joseph Diaz, who served as CLI chaplain, and Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians Sister Wansuk Kyndait from Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Pearl City, who was a small group leader. Read more...

Opening of Hawaii Federal Public Housing Waiting List

From the Office for Social Ministry

Government subsidized Public Housing assists low-income families, our kupuna and persons with disabilities to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing. A program of the Federal Government, the maximum rent is based on 30% of the eligible Family’s adjusted income or a flat rate as established by HUD (U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development). With the high cost of housing in the islands, this federal public housing program makes it possible for many throughout our community to keep a roof over their heads.

For a very short period and applicable to specific locations, the Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA) will temporarily reopen the waiting list for low-income applicants on Oahu. HPHA will accept the first 1,000 qualified applications to be added to each waiting list. Applications will not be accepted in person, only online. Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
1891 – 1942
Memorial - August 9

Edith Stein, today’s saint’s given name, was a highly cultured European intellectual. She obtained a doctorate in philosophy summa cum laude from a German university after being accepted as a student by a renowned philosopher. She mastered numerous languages and worked as both a nurse and interpreter during World War I. She was a naturally gifted and effective teacher. She translated various works of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman from English and a work of Saint Thomas Aquinas from the original Latin. She published a book called Potency and Act on some foundational concepts in Thomism. Her erudition opened doors to elite circles of artists, philosophers, and other creators of culture. Yet she decided, in the flower of her life, to leave the shore, to wade into the sea of God, and to dive deep for the pearl of great price. Read more...
