Summer is here, the days are long, the North Cascades Highway is finally open—and the mountains are calling. Read on to discover all the ways you can experience the North Cascades and surrounding ecosystems with us, from Base Camp Learning & Lodging stays and Skagit Tours to Family Getaways and a robust slate of Field Excursions. Be sure to plan ahead—many programs are filling quickly.

If you’re in Bellingham, we hope you’ll join us and Setting Sun Circle for a special event in our Nature of Writing Summer Series. Highlights include a July 16 reading at Village Books from Sierra magazine editor Jason Dove Mark’s new book The Earth Said Remember Me, as well as a slideshow from Guardians of Life with award-winning National Geographic photographer Kiliii Yüyan. Through vivid portraits of Indigenous communities—youth and elders, hunters and farmers, spiritual leaders and craftspeople—Yüyan's new book offer powerful perspectives on relationships to land and care. GEOLOGIC HISTORY OF THE SKAGIT RIVER BY BOAT
August 13-14, Upper Skagit

The Skagit River watershed has been shaped by powerful forces—ice, fire, water, and time. Join us for a two-day journey by foot, car, and raft as we read this landscape together and trace the deep-time forces that carved this dramatic river valley. Led by retired North Cascades National Park geologist Jon Riedel, the excursion includes a full-day float with Triad River Tours—where glacial deposits, ancient lahars, and converging tributaries reveal the region’s geologic story unfolding mile by mile.

ILLUSTRATING POETRY ABOUT OUR DYNAMIC LANDSCAPE
September 5, ELC

Writing and art offer a way to process environmental grief while exploring the resilience found in landscapes, the creatures that inhabit them, and in our own actions to protect what we love. With the North Cascades’ recent wildfires and intense rains—set against a deep-time history of glaciation and change—the range provides a powerful setting for reflection. Join Methow Valley–based writer and artist Sarah Gilman for a field course on crafting an illustrated poem in conversation with the land.
