College faculty participate in executive training for quality, safety and patient experience

To continue to support outcomes-driven practices, faculty representatives from several UF College of Medicine departments have attended Intermountain Healthcare's renowned training program in quality, safety and health care delivery. The faculty are leveraging their skills to execute quality and patient safety initiatives within their home departments to increase high-value, patient-centered care.

The training program is part of the value pillar of the College of Medicine's strategic plan. To date, 10 faculty have completed the executive training. Five faculty will join the fall cohort and another four faculty members will attend the Harvard Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership Certificate Program, which will launch in May.

Eight recognized in 2022 Medical Guild graduate student research competition

In front of dozens of peers, mentors and a panel of faculty judges, eight College of Medicine graduate students competed April 14 at the 47th annual Medical Guild Research Symposium as the academic milestone returned in person for the first time since 2019.

The students, who were each nominated to represent their specific biomedical sciences concentration, presented and answered questions on years of meticulous, passionate research ranging in topic from brain tumors to sarcomere structure to olfactory sensory neurons.

Students from MD class of 2024 to receive first white coats in ceremony May 8

Students from the UF College of Medicine class of 2024 will receive their first white coats in a ceremony at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Sunday, May 8.

Family, friends and the UF College of Medicine community can celebrate this milestone by tuning in to a livestream of the event beginning at 2 p.m.

Faculty receive Lifetime Achievement Awards at spring reception

Six UF College of Medicine faculty — Henry Baker, Ph.D.; Regina Bussing, M.D.; Christopher Forsmark, M.D.;. Ira Longini Jr., Ph.D.; Tomas Martin, M.D.; and Frederick Southwick, M.D. — were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards during the college’s spring faculty appreciation reception earlier this week.

During their time with the college, the honorees have contributed significant research and provided exceptional patient care, embodying the spirit of the college and health care.

Drs. Ryan Nall and Amanda Maxey named 2022 Teachers of the Year

Two UF College of Medicine alumni and educators were recently honored with prestigious awards for their teaching. College of Medicine students recognized Amanda Maxey, M.D. ’93, a research assistant professor in the department of anatomy and cell biology, as the 2022 Basic Science Teacher of the Year and Ryan Nall, M.D. ’09, an assistant professor and the assistant clerkship director in the division of general internal medicine, as the 2022 Clinical Teacher of the Year. 

The awards were announced at Monday evening’s faculty appreciation reception.

Drs. Karyn Esser and Duane Mitchell receive 2022 college research awards

Duane Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., and Karyn Esser, Ph.D., were recognized at the recent faculty appreciation reception as the college’s 2022 clinical and basic science researchers of the year for their innovations and proven commitment to science.

Mitchell is a leading expert in the development of innovative immunotherapy treatments for adults and children with malignant brain tumors and Esser is a trailblazer in the study of circadian rhythms in the skeletal muscle system.
