NCSC Threats to the Sports sector report

The Scottish Sports Association (SSA) and its Member governing bodies of sport have been working in partnership with the Scottish Government Cyber Resilience Unit since 2018 on building awareness and skills related to cyber resilience.
We know that cyber resilience is vastly important for the sporting landscape. The National Cyber Security Centre has recently published its latest intelligence on the threats to the sector, including the fact that 70% of sports organisations have experienced a cyber incident or breach.

SSA Cyber Resilience Resources

Cyber resilience is important for everyone. We know many Scottish sports clubs and organisations do not have the resources to appoint a dedicated IT team.
This pack is being provided to all SSA Members for distribution to their clubs and contains training materials, guidance and conversation starters available from trusted sources, including the Scottish Government and the

National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The guides can be easily implemented and will help prevent the most common cyber-attacks.
Some of the language used by the guidance is not directly applicable to sports clubs, however, the principles outlined are appropriate for the structures and scale of organisations in the sporting sector. Please bear this in mind when using the materials.

Top tips from the SSA Cyber Resilience Focus Group

Consider what your key assets are (e.g. finances, personal data, performance data) and start with how you protect them.

  • Appoint a champion to lead on cyber resilience in the organisation.
  • Foster a culture of sharing best practice and learning from mistakes.
  • Use guidance to start conversations – perhaps make cyber resilience a regular part of team meetings or internal training.
  • Be proportionate – the most common cyber-attacks can be deflected by a combination of good practice and simple training that is available for free or at a low cost.

Responding to a cyber incident

Had a cyber incident and not sure what to do? The Scottish Business Resilience Centre (SBRC) has launched a free cyber incident response helpline to help victims of cybercrime understand what support is immediately available to them and help them recover.
SBRC will help organisations confirm whether they have been the victim of an attack and, if so, provide expert guidance to get them back to secure operations.

Free cyber incident helpline for businesses: 01786 437 472 weekdays 9am-5pm

Cyber Essentials Accreditation

Find out more

Cyber Essentials is a simple but effective Government-backed scheme that will help you to protect your organisation, whatever its size, against a whole range of the most common cyber attacks.
Cyber Essentials is an accreditation that demonstrates that your systems and processes are set up to repel the majority of cyber attacks, which are basic in nature - the digital equivalent of a thief trying your front door to see if it’s unlocked. By achieving Cyber Essentials, you can demonstrate that you take cyber resilience seriously, while protecting yourself against cyber attacks.

CyberScotland partnership

The CyberScotland Partnership is a collaboration of key strategic stakeholders, brought together to focus efforts on improving cyber resilience across Scotland in a coordinated and coherent way. A key component of this work is the CyberScotland website, which works as a single online resource for individuals and organisations seeking information and support across a range of cyber security and resilience issues, along with information on skills development and links to key resources.
