DOM ANNOUNCEMENTS

Emory's IM Residency Program names StARR grant recipients

The J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program has named two first-year residents, Daniel Rzewnicki, MD, (mentor Siva Bhavani, MD) and Nancy Wareing, MD, (mentor Nadine Rouphael, MD), as well as one third-year resident, Anamaria Dragan, MD (mentor Rebecca Levit, MD), as the three 2024 recipients of the “Stimulating Access to Research in Residency” (StARR) grant.

Emory was initially selected to receive the highly competitive StARR award in 2018. The initiative was created by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to address a nationwide shortage of physician scientists. Professor of Medicines, Igho Ofotokun, MD, and Nadine Rouphael, MD, (Infectious Diseases) serve as co-directors of the program.

2024 Staff Engagement and Future of Work Survey

Emory University has now launched a new staff engagement survey which is the perfect opportunity for our staff members to share their feedback.

The survey, which launched last Friday, March 1 and will remain open until Friday, March 15, asks staff members several questions such as "how you feel about working at Emory", "what it is like interacting with your work team", as well as questions about your satisfaction with your job, and your opinions about trust, respect, and belonging. The survey also asks additional questions about Emory's culture in order to provide important data for the "Future of Work" campus-wide project sponsored by Business and Administration, a project that strives to create a shared vision for the future of work at the University.

Things to note:

  • On March 1, you should have received an email from Emory – Ctrl HR – Talent Mgt. with the subject line "2024 Staff Engagement and Future of Work Survey." The email included a link to the survey.
  • The survey, which launched on March 1, 2024, will remain open for two weeks. The deadline to take the survey is March 15.
  • The survey is confidential; individual responses will not be identified or shared, except in the aggregate.
  • Key demographics will be collected, but these are optional and will not be used to identify anyone individually.
  • The survey will take approximately 20-25 minutes. You can use work time to complete the survey.

All staff members who complete the survey will be automatically entered into a prize drawing for some Emory swag from the Emory Barnes and Noble Bookstore! A total of 40 winners will be drawn on Friday, March 29 and the winners will be notified via email.

Stacy Higgins, MD, named a 2024 IPECP project awardee

The Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) Office of Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) has announced its 2024 IPECP Project Award recipients. The awards support interprofessional learning opportunities across Emory’s three health professional schools for medicine, nursing, and public health. Stacy Higgins, MD, (General Internal Medicine) is one of three PIs who received this grant for the project titled, "DPT and MD Program Student Engagement in Emory Farmworker Project."

Launched in 1996, the Emory Farmworker Project provides free health care to more than 2,000 farmworkers and their families annually in pop-up clinics in Bainbridge and Valdosta, Georgia. Led by the Emory University School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program, this project will support the inclusion of DPT and MD students in the program.

“One of the key components of health care is the ability to work on interprofessional teams to deliver the best care to the patient. IPECP funding for MD and DPT students to attend the Emory Farmworker Project will allow several of our students to utilize concepts they have learned in the classroom and practice these skills under supervision in the field. The funding will also allow us to measure the attitudes about interprofessional collaboration and team psychological safety.”
— Stacey Higgins, project principal investigator

Jeann L. Sabino-Carvalho, PhD, receives Southern Society for Clinical Investigation (SSCI) Trainee Research Award

READ MORE ON THE AWARDS

Congratulations to Jeann L. Sabino-Carvalho, PhD, postdoctoral fellow, Division of Renal Medicine, on receiving the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation (SSCI) Trainee Research Award! Annually, SSCI provides grants to acknowledge the fine work conducted by faculty or trainees.

"The work I presented at The Southern Regional Meeting investigated the potential involvement of baroreflex dysfunction in the cardiovascular disease burden within the chronic kidney disease (CKD) population. I do want to recognize my mentor, Dr. Jeanie Park. In the pursuit of unraveling critical kidney-nerve-heart interactions, particularly in the context of kidney failure, I have received direct mentorship from her. As a leading expert in the neural control of circulation, Dr. Park has taught me cutting-edge techniques that allowed me to conduct the work I presented in New Orleans. Noteworthy, this was my first in-person oral talk at a conference, so it was very special to me as a young scientist."
