Spotlight on Mental Health and Carers
September 2021
We are getting ready for National Carers Week, 10-16 October, and invite you to connect with us and get involved in an event near you! In this edition, we encourage you to take time for Queensland Mental Health Week and enjoy the stories of Rebecca, Damien and Kate, who have seen big changes in their lives since using their NDIS funding to support improved mental health in their daily lives.
Damien's life is back on track Damien was living an unhealthy lifestyle until accessing NDIS supports helped him change his mind-set and become fitter and healthier.
Kate is moving on with her life Since joining the NDIS in January, Kate has already achieved her goals — to be fit and healthier, to live independently and to be a responsible pet owner.
Podcast: Understanding mental healthRebecca Johnson is a young artist and musician from Rockhampton living with bipolar disorder and chronic illness. It took years for Rebecca to get a definitive diagnosis, and she says she's still learning what disability means for her and un-learning a lot of internalised ableism — negative ideas about disability we might have picked up unconsciously, even if we have a disability ourselves. Check out Rebecca's story by clicking on the link below, as well as our new podcast season.
Alberto dreams big Brisbane NDIS participant Alberto has recently returned to Australia after representing his birth country, Jamaica, at the Tokyo Paralympics. Find out how the athlete uses NDIS supports to make his running dreams come true.
