WORLD DIABETES DAY SPECIAL EDITIONThe World Health Organization (WHO) today released its first global guidelines for the management of diabetes during pregnancy, a condition affecting about one in six pregnancies – or 21 million women annually. The new recommendations provide a critical roadmap to tackle this growing health challenge and prevent serious complications for both women and their children. Teams which have gone above and beyond to improve diabetes care have been celebrated at the 15th annual Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes Awards. The highly respected awards ceremony took place on the evening of Thursday, November 6, at Sanofi’s UK headquarters in Reading. Early detection is one of the most powerful tools there is to change the story of type 1 diabetes, a charity has warned. A new report, published by Breakthrough T1D, explains why spotting type 1 diabetes in its earliest stages is so important. Scientists have made a major breakthrough in understanding why type 1 diabetes is more aggressive in young children, offering the clearest explanation to date of why the condition is particularly difficult to manage when diagnosed early in life. The study, published in Science Advances, to mark World Diabetes Day, was funded by the Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge – a partnership between The Steve Morgan Foundation, Diabetes UK and Breakthrough T1D. The findings could pave the way for new strategies to prevent or delay type 1 diabetes and, in time, contribute to a cure. Lipohypertrophy – the thickened, lumpy areas that can develop under the skin when insulin is injected too frequently into the same site or when needles are reused – remains a common but often under-recognised complication in diabetes care.
