Six from Six! A Spring Quad to Celebrate

Auckland’s representative season is off to a flying start, with all six teams finishing top of their divisions at the 2026 Spring Quad!

Taking on Northland, North Harbour and Bay of Plenty, Auckland recorded 42 wins from 60 contests, delivering an impressive 70% overall win rate.

Men’s Development led the way with 78%, followed by Men’s 1–5 Years on 75%. The Women’s Development team secured top spot by just two shots on differential, while the 1–5 Year teams finished with impressive differentials of +81 for the women and +79 for the men.

But the weekend was about more than results. With new combinations coming together, the positive team culture and support across the squads were real highlights.

Changes to National Champ of Champs 2027

Bowls New Zealand has confirmed a revised format for the 2027 National Champion of Champions, with an 18-day playing programme running from 21 June to 11 July 2027 at Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Club.

There are some changes clubs and prospective representatives need to be aware of as we head through the 2026/27 season.

What do clubs need to know?

  • Start preparing players and club administration processes for the revised national pathway.
  • Members, club championship, convenors and tournament committees to refer to Bowls New Zealand Conditions of Play and indicative playing schedule.
  • There are no fundamental changes to the Bowls Auckland Calendar of Events published on 1 June, apart from the revised National Champ of Champs dates.

Bowls Auckland will continue to run its own events under separate Conditions of Play and has updated the Calendar of Events to reflect the changes.

If you have questions, get in touch with the Bowls Auckland team or Bowls New Zealand directly.

Jason Wong Takes on the World

Scotland is calling! Auckland’s Jason Wong is heading to the World Bowls Tour Under 25 Singles Championships after finishing as New Zealand’s highest-ranked U25 player in the PBA New Zealand Series, earning his place on the international stage.

The Royal Oak and Howick bowler will line up against some of the world’s best young talent when the championships get underway on Friday 30 October.

Helping make the trip possible has been a grant from the Bowls Auckland St George Fund, alongside a fundraising campaign backed by generous donors from across the Auckland bowls community. It’s fantastic to see our bowls whānau getting behind emerging talent and helping create opportunities like this.

All the best, Jason, we’ll be cheering you on from home!

Performance Mindset: Lessons For The Green

Consistency, confidence and connection were among the key takeaways for Les Eagleton and Kevin Beasley, who attended the Performance Mindset Conference on Saturday 10 October.

Bringing together coaches and athletes from across a range of sports, the conference featured speakers including Richie McCaw, Suzie Bates, Tom Walsh and John Quinn, who works with the Black Jacks.

Several lessons stood out for lawn bowls. Consistency comes from purposeful practice and repetition, while having a routine to manage pressure can help players stay focused when the heat is on. Mental preparation also matters, with visualisation helping players rehearse their routines and picture the shot they want to play.

Just as importantly, great coaching is about understanding the person behind the player. Clear goals, shared expectations and trust between coach and player create the foundations for improvement.

And amid all the talk of performance, one message rang true across every sport: keep the joy in the game. Creating an environment where players can learn, improve and enjoy the experience is every bit as important as the results.

Plenty of food for thought as Bowls Auckland continues to support coaches and players to develop their game, build confidence and perform at their best.

Auckland Bowlers Shine at North Harbour Masters

A great result for Auckland bowlers at the Bowls North Harbour Masters!

Congrats to Estelle Hickey and Linda Ralph (Carlton Cornwall), who claimed gold in the 55–69 Women’s Pairs, with fellow Auckland bowlers Sacha Collins and Dana Taylor taking silver. There was more gold for Auckland, with Stephen Campbell and Dana Taylor (Howick) winning the 55–69 Mixed Pairs.

Well done to everyone involved!

Family Fun Rolled into Bucklands Beach

The sun was shining, the bowls were rolling and the face-painting queue was in full swing at Bucklands Beach Bowling Club last week!

With support from Sport Auckland, our first school holiday Family Roll Up Day brought local whānau together for an afternoon of games, laughter and giving bowls a go.

While the kids enjoyed the activities, parents and grandparents were chatting with club members about joining up. Some even left with membership forms in hand, asking when the next one would be!

A huge thanks to the Bucklands Beach team for helping make the day such a success. With another Family Roll Up already planned for the summer holidays, this is just the beginning.

Could your club be next? We’re keen to run more family days across Auckland this summer. If your club would like to get involved, contact Hannah at hannah@bowlsauckland.co.nz and we’ll get the ball (or bowl) rolling!
