As we are nearing the end of term one, there are still many events that occurred this week and will continue to be held during the next two weeks for students. Harmony Day celebrations were most successful with students able to sample a wide variety of foods from many different countries. Students in Year 7 were very excited to participate and enjoyed themselves very much. We are able to offer our students experiences in six different languages for the mandatory Languages requirement in Year 7, which is a unique feature for our school. Thank you to all our Languages staff for the planning and organisation of this event, well done to all the teachers and Year 9 French students who assisted on the day.
Mr Rowe has been busy training students in futsal during the term and a successful gala day was held at the school last Friday. There are also many students participating in the Futsal Championships this week over three days, with futsal being a very popular sport for both girls and boys. All the teams made the semi-finals with the Under 13’s Girls winning their division and the Open Boys losing in the last thirty seconds of the game to bring home the silver. Congratulations to these teams and well done to all involved. Our school has had many successes, over time, under the guidance of Mr Rowe, evidenced by the many trophies on display in our cabinet.
Year 10 HSIE teachers have been preparing for the mandatory Geography excursion for Year 10. This offsite excursion is always enjoyed by staff and students. The excursion is held at Lake Cathie each year and observations this year will be interesting when compared with those of years past when conditions in and around the lake will have differed greatly. Unfortunately, the event has been postponed due to the inclement weather.
Our School Captains, Jasmine O’Brien and Mia Bales travelled to Sydney to meet the Governor of NSW this week. They were accompanied by their Year Advisor, Ms Graham. This is an annual event, held at NSW Parliament House, where school leaders from across the state are invited to participate in the Parliament Leadership Program. The program acknowledges their leadership and provides them with the opportunity to meet Governor of NSW, Her Excellency Margaret Beazley. It also provides them with information on the history behind our system of government, parliamentary proceedings, and the role of the Governor within the Parliament.
The P&C AGM will be held in the staff common room at 3.45pm next Tuesday 29th March. Please come along to meet parents and find out more about the school. Also, the School Cup Assembly is scheduled for Tuesday 5th April at 9.15am with Parent/Teacher afternoon for Years 7 and 8 also scheduled after school. Both events are planned to go ahead.

Mrs M Hutchinson
Principal

Please take note of the following announcements, for any questions please contact us on 6556 8100.

What you need to do if you are exposed to COVID

We are currently seeing a rise in the number of people in our school community who have either been diagnosed with COVID or are isolating because they are close/household contacts. The Principal thanks parents for keeping students at home if they have symptoms and also for notifying the school promptly and working with us cooperatively. The DoE has asked that schools continue to provide RAT tests to students/families for symptomatic testing for the remainder of term one. Please come to the office to collect the tests or ask students to collect them. Masks are also available for students and staff who wish to continue wearing them.
The DoE also advises, “selected schools may be advised by the department’s Health & Safety team to temporarily adopt some or all additional COVID-smart measures for a period of time (usually 7 days) as a “circuit breaker” where there are increased levels of COVID-19 transmission at school. The school principal will work with their DEL and Health & Safety to put the appropriate measures in place to reduce COVID-19 transmission and hopefully avoid the need to revert cohorts to learning from home”. Please refer to Advice for families (follow the link below)  for further information.

NAPLAN Practice Tests

NAPLAN Practice – 21st to 25th March 2022
Many students in Year 7 and Year 9 successfully participated in NAPLAN Practice during week 8.
During this week we have had many students in Year 7 and Year 9 absent due to COVID. If your child was not able to be at school for the NAPLAN Practice tests you are able to access the NAPLAN Public demonstration tests which replicates the NAPLAN Online Platform quite well. This site is open to the public at any time.
Go to the public demonstration site. You will find the link below.
Select the appropriate Year group, select a test (there are 4 different tests), select standard test, select “next” and “next” again and finally “yes.”
This will take you to the tests. It is suggested that you attempt all 4 tests. The site is simple to use and has a number of features that support students access. It is recommended that you have headphone as the site allows question to be read aloud in parts and an inbuilt calculator, protractor and ruler as well as the ability to flag questions to go back to later.
If you have any questions, please contact Di Bernasconi.

Charlie finishes 3rd in NSW Sabot State Titles

Charlie has competed and sailed over 2 separate weekends for the NSW Sabot State Titles (Lane Cove, Sydney Harbour 12th and 13th February and Teralba, Lake Macquarie 19th and 20th March) in the sailing class called Sabot. Over these two weekends, Charlie sailed 11 races and finished 3rd in the state out of 40 competitors. Last Saturday had challenging conditions with strong wind and capsizes, however, Charlie sailed strongly through the gusts. Yesterday saw lighter winds and smiles on the sailor's faces. Charlie's final score was 22 and he prevailed through rain, no wind, light breezes and strong gusty southerly winds. He will be sailing at Teralba Amateur Sailing club again in April school holidays for the National Sabot Titles. Congratulations Charlie and good luck for the Nationals.

Max in North Coast Open Basketball Trials

Max Eggert in North Coast Open Basketball Trials

Max Eggert in Yr10 (back row, 2nd from left in pic) represented CHHS and our Lower North Coast zone at the North Coast Opens basketball Trials at Byron Bay on Wednesday 16th March. Max played alongside boys from other local schools who were selected on the LNC knockout comp day recently at Port Macquarie.

Being selected to play at the NC level is a great achievement considering Max is only in Yr10 and most of his Representative team mates were in Yr12. Jamieson Brugeaud in Yr11 at CHHS was selected to play in the LNC girls team at the NC trial day but unfortunately could not attend. Hopefully she'll get a chance to play at that level next year. Mr Roberts from CHHS, who coached the LNC Girls team at Byron Bay, is keen to get more girls at CHHS involved in developing their basketball skills.
Any boy or girl interested in playing in a 3 on 3 lunch time friendly competition starting Friday 25th March needs to see Mr O'Keefe at the Oasis or at lunch on Monday 21st at the MPC.
Any girl interested in doing some skills sessions in and outside of school needs to see Mr Roberts at the E block staffroom or lunch on Mon 21/3 at the MPC. A recent post on the CHHS FB page has more info about some girls events.

Year 10 2021 Visual Artworks on display

The year 10 Visual Arts class from 2021 have recently had some of their artworks hung in the foyer of the school library for display. The students were required to deconstruct, then reconstruct an object (most used chairs) into an abstract sculpture. They then were to use their completed sculpture as inspiration for an abstract painting. We studied Modernist abstract artists of the 20th Century for further inspiration. Here are some of their innovative creations which will be on display for the year.
