Now, I am thrilled to have the honour addressing you as the HDR Liaison Officer of the University of Adelaide. In my role I aim at enhancing the AGRS support and communication channels specifically for you, our valued HDRs. National Industry PhD Program
The Adelaide Graduate Research School congratulates our researchers who secured funding for collaborative PhD projects in the latest round of the National Industry PhD Program: • Dr Jessica Grieger (Adelaide Medical School), whose collaboration with Repromed will help IVF clinics develop ways to screen the fluid within the women’s ovarian follicles to select healthier eggs for better embryo transfer, to improve pregnancy success rates. • Prof Elaine Fox (School of Psychology), partnering with Brain Vector to explore how personalised virtual reality (VR) experiences can stimulate positive emotions, providing a non-pharmaceutical method for treating people diagnosed with clinical depression. • Prof Ben Cazzolato, A/Prof Claire Jones, and PhD candidate Scott Jenkin (School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering), collaborating with Armor Australia to develop a new method for standardising stab-resistant Personal Protective Equipment, thereby improving safety standards and bolstering Australia's leadership in life protection innovation. Postgraduate Scholarship OpportunitiesThe Adelaide Graduate Research School maintains a searchable database of available scholarship opportunities (both full scholarships and supplementary scholarships), funded by both the University of Adelaide and external funding bodies. While the majority of available scholarships are awarded as part of the standard admission and scholarship rounds for domestic and international students, some are awarded at different times throughout the year, and may have a separate application process. Elevate: Boosting Women in STEM Scholarship Applications close soon for the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering's Elevate: Boosting women in STEM scholarships for domestic postgraduate research students commencing in 2025. Elevate scholarships support women and non-binary people studying postgraduate research degrees, and aims to address gender inequities in STEM through fostering industry-academia collaborations in research and business, growing professional skills in STEM and propelling scholars into leadership. The Elevate program provides: • A scholarship • Access to events and networking • Mentoring • Wellbeing support during scholars’ university studies Applications close 30 August 2024. The Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship The Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship was established to honour and continue the work of Dr Clare Burton, a leading researcher, public sector administrator, academic, consultant and writer on employment equity. The student will receive a $10,000 one-off payment as a research allowance. If you are a current research student at an Australian university, enrolled either full- or part-time in a research degree, pursuing research where the major piece of work is focused on gender equity, and you have completed at least the first milestone of your research degree you may be eligible to apply. Student Health and Wellbeing Mental Health Awareness Month Art Competition All current University of Adelaide students are invited to participate in the 2024 Mental Health Awareness Month Art Competition. This year's theme emphasises the importance of developing resilience to navigate life's challenges. Whether through vibrant colours, symbolic imagery, or thoughtful composition, we want to see how students can convey the message of resilience in a single artwork. This is their chance to make a meaningful impact through art and contribute to the promotion of mental health awareness at the University of Adelaide. Three students will have the chance to win $500! Mental health journeys are unique, and having multiple winners allows us to showcase a variety of perspectives, ensuring more voices are heard and celebrated. Entry closes 4 August. MATE: Become A Confident Bystander Training. Want to become a confident bystander in an uncomfortable situation? Support yourself and others to identify and respond to problematic behaviours. MATE is a 3-hour prevention workshop about attitudes that drive gender-based violence, and actions we can all take to change culture. The next MATE course is taking place on Wednesday 31st July at 10am. You can participate in Pilates, yoga, boxing, HIIT and more. There will be a free coffee session after every session, so you can debrief with your new exercise pals! Sessions will take place at the Fitness Hub on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between the 20th of July and the 18th of September. All participants will go into the draw to win a 6-month gym membership. Congratulations to Chris Chang, the lucky winner of a 6-month membership to the Fitness Hub! ![]() Children’s University School Holiday Program During the July school holidays, Dr Agnes Arthur and some of our HDR students took part in the Children’s University School Holiday Program. This was a great chance for HDRs to hone their communication skills and connect with the community. Primary school students (ages 5-14) enjoyed engaging presentations and interactive activities centred on health and medical science. Activities included simple experiments, exploring human organs, sensation and perception, nutrition, the cardio/respiratory system, memory and response, and even making a DNA helix model.
