More than two decades after it became its own nonprofit organization, HOPE Services Hawaii continues to grow and to broaden its efforts to help people experiencing homelessness on Hawaii island.

In 2024 alone, the agency has made strides in expanding its network of support sites and has also worked to help houseless individuals wherever they are as they face challenges beyond their control.

Earlier this year, HOPE Services assisted people facing a homeless encampment enforcement in Kailua-Kona. The organization learned that Hawaii County would take action at the Kona Community Aquatic Center and prepared to help the 16 people living in the camp there. Read more...

Walking Together with Migrants and Refugees

From the Office for Social Ministry

“Open our eyes and our hearts so that every encounter with those in need becomes an encounter with Jesus, your Son and our Lord.” Pope Francis, World Day of Migrants and Refugees, September 29, 2024

One focus in the 2024 US elections is immigration’s impact on not only on border states but nationwide. Daily in the media there are multiple images of migrants and their families on the Mexico-US border, as well as in many of the major cities and rural areas. Bishop Mark J. Seitz of El Paso, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Migration, recently remarked that the Pope’s message for the 2024 World Day for Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) provides a special scriptural image of and perspective on migrants today. “Pope Francis calls for solidarity with migrants, reminding us that their journeys mirror the biblical Exodus, with God as their guide and companion. He emphasizes that every encounter with migrants is an encounter with Christ, urging us to respond with compassion, recognizing their struggles as a reflection of our shared journey toward the Kingdom of Heaven.” Read more...

Submissions Sought for Book on Cathedral

By Easter Almuena
Special to the Herald

I invite everyone to recollect memories they have of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace for a book I am compiling celebrating the cathedral.

Were you married there or your children baptized there? Did you spend time in prayer there and found yourself closer to Jesus? Do you serve there as a minister or as a volunteer? Do you have a fond memory with friends or family coming together for Mass, and perhaps meeting other people whom you eventually became close to? What part of the Mass moved you?

It may even be something that made you laugh and brought joy to your life. Whatever that may be, as you recollect those times, pray to God and consider putting it into writing. Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week

Saint Vincent de Paul
c. 1581–1660
Memorial – September 27

Vincent de Paul was the third of six children born to peasant farmers in the village of Pouy in the Kingdom of France, about 100 miles north of the border with the Kingdom of Spain. As a child, he worked the fields and tended the livestock, but he also showed great intelligence. Although he was quite devout as a child, he was ashamed of his poverty and longed to advance in society. He later shamefully admitted that he was even embarrassed by his father when he was young: “I was ashamed to walk with him and to acknowledge him as my father because he was badly dressed and a little lame.” Vincent’s father, however, was not ashamed of Vincent and saw much promise in him. When Vincent was a young teenager, his father sold an ox so that he could send his son to be formally educated. Read more...
