Economic Empowerment for LGBTQ+ Business Community
The National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) published a report titled, America’s LGBT Economy Report NGLCC Americas LGBT Economy in 2017. This was the first economic data report on the impact of LGBTQ+ owned businesses in the US economy. Based on a review of 909 LGBTQ owned businesses certified by NGLCC, it was determined that: - LGBTQ+ businesses have an average revenue of $2.4 million per year
- Most LGBTQ+ enterprises have been in business for at least 12 years - above the national average
- NGLCC-certified LGBTQ+ employers created a total of 33,000 jobs
- LGBTQ+ businesses contributed over $1.15 billion to the U.S. economy in 2015
- The current estimate of the contribution is $1.7 trillion in annual economic impact
The Pride Center of Vermont, the Vermont office of the Small Business Administration, the Inclusive Entrepreneurship program at Mercy Connections, and the Center for Women and Enterprise are exploring ways to help LGBTQ+ business owners and startups in Vermont.
Outcomes could be the development of an LGBTQ+-owned business directory, business planning or business skill sharing for LGTBQ+ businesses, an LGBTQ+ vendor expo. It will be helpful to find out what supports already exist and what the LGBTQ+ business owners and startups want to create in Vermont.
For individuals or business owners that are interested in helping to create an LGBTQ+ business network, event, or project, they are encouraged to share their feedback at: https://forms.gle/zw9ppCs2TSmanA8EA by July 15th, 2023.
For questions, please contact Claire Wheeler at cwheeler@mercyconnections.org.
