Gender and Health Social Research Project

There is still time to get involved in our exciting VHS social research project exploring the relationship between gender and health. The research will include how gendered experiences of health intersect with other forms of identity, including sexuality, race, ethnicity, age, income and caring status.

There are several ways to get involved, including consultation events, a survey and the option to request a 1-1 chat.

Healthy Weight Implementation Plan

We have been invited to feed into the development of the Healthy Weight Implementation Plan, supporting the key initial priority of ‘Improving Healthy Weight’ in the Population Health Framework. We’re keen to ensure that the evidence and insights of our members on this topic are reflected in our inputs to this important plan.

If you have any insights or evidence you would like to share on this, please get in touch by the 23rd January.

Jeremy Balfour MSP Engagement Request

I met with Jeremy Balfour MSP last month to discuss our Manifesto for Health Creation. He is standing for election as an independent candidate at next year’s election and is keen to hear the views of VHS members in Edinburgh and Lothians regarding his health pledges. Further details can be found on his social media channels, but these pledges are:

  • Establish a 5-day GP appointment guarantee, including opening practices for two evenings a week.
  • Connected digital care, including a shared electronic patient record and improved digital access for patients.
  • Cut NHS waste to fund frontline care.

If you operate in Edinburgh or the Lothians and would like to share your views with Mr Balfour, please get in touch with him directly.

Consultation Response: Quality Prescribing for Chronic Pain

In our response to the Scottish Government’s consultation on Quality Prescribing for Chronic Pain guidance, we welcome the recognition of social prescribing as an effective non-pharmacological approach for treating chronic pain. However, we also advise caution in referring to social prescribing models in clinical guidance without recognising the considerable challenges many social prescribing services are facing at present.
