1-5 Year Triples final4 June 2022 The first semi-final with Jeff Amadia, Colin Ayris-Webster and Jean-Claude Fuller (Te Atatu) proved too strong for Marg Dotchin, Henry Fane and Stephen Campbell (Pt Chevalier), winning 19 shots to 7. The second semi-final saw a closely contested match between two Howick sides - Eddie Jones, Bruce Fenton and Graeme Thompson battled hard to overcome Rod Sadgrove, Doug Surmond and Mike Dickie, 18 shots to 11, to secure their place in the Final. The Finals match was a very high standard with superb consistency from all players. However, Eddie Jones skippered combination established an early advantage. Te Atatu just could not match its opponent. The Howick side claimed the 1-5 Year Triples title, 20 shots to 9. 1-5 Year Triples champions: Eddie Jones, Graeme Thompson, Bruce Fenton from Howick 1-5 Year Pairs final5 June 2022 Auckland Bowls 1-5 year Pairs championship was completed on Sunday, 5 June, at Remuera's indoor complex. In semi-final 1, Auckland Bowling Club was represented by Paul Neazor and Gloria Akaruru. They set the standard high from the start of play, defeating Glenn Taylor and James Forsyth (Onehunga & Districts) in an outstanding shot-for-shot semi-final. Paul and Gloria claimed victory, 18-14. In semi-final 2, Viliami Fifita and Steve Fisher from Royal Oak were on fire as they downed Pt Chevalier's Henry Fane and Jean-Claude Fuller, 19-4. This was a high-quality match, and the score was not a true reflection of the standard of play. An outstanding performance of lead bowls from ABC's Paul Neazor, skippered by Gloria Akaruru, allowed them to jump out to an early 15-shot lead. Vili and Steve kept the dream alive, never surrendering their spirit to ignite an almost unlikely fight back. Claiming multiples on consecutive ends the score was closing in fast. However, the slow start put victory out of reach with the final score 19-14 in favour of Paul and Gloria, claiming the Auckland 1-5 Year Pairs title. Congratulations to Paul and Gloria. It was great to see a mixed combination win this year's Centre championship title. 1-5 Year Pairs champions: Paul Neazor and Gloria Akaruru from Auckland Bowling Club 1-5 Year Pairs finalists: (Front): Henry Fane, Viliami Fifita, Paul Neazor. 1-5 Year Fours11-12 June 2022 Wishing all players the best of luck for this weekend's 1-5 Year Fours event. While the first three games were played on a lovely sunny day on Saturday, the weather was not so kind Sunday. A further three games were played - the bowlers continued to play the second game in drizzly conditions, and after the lunch break, we were able to play the final game in a dry but cold atmosphere. This year was significant in the history of the Gold Cup. Deputy Mayor of Auckland during the early 1950s, Bob Beechey, represented the City at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. While in London, he ordered the Gold Cup was then presented to Epsom Bowling Club by the then club President HG Beechey, to be awarded at the annual open event competition. Some outstanding bowls were played throughout the two days, with some very close results in many games. The tournament was organised and run by Roger Sutton, is to be congratulated on the smooth running of the event. Congratulations to the winners from St Heliers, Mark Posa, Roger Johnston and Ian Dee. Runners-up from Grey Lynn, Liz Rereiti, Kolonisi Polima and Michael Liuaga. Although the homemade restorative soups Kohi served earlier in the day warded off the winter chill, play was called for the 20 teams after 5 ends after lunch. Edmund Hillary usually organises the tournaments with other Ryman Villages and will visit them in return. But due to Covid the last two years, villages have not been able to hold these. This year, a bigger tournament and gathering was in order, and organisers were delighted when Remuera agreed to host in appreciation for Ryman’s sponsorship and partnership with the club. “It was great to catch up with the other village members and renew old friendships,” said Margaret Macoll of Glendowie Bowling Club and Edmund Hillary. Remuera ensured bowlers and supporters were warmly welcomed and President Maurice Smith went out of his way to help with everything, doing the dishes, preparing the mats, jacks, etc., providing biscuits and then opening the bar at the end of the day with Peter Bennett. While some players are or have been members of other Auckland bowling clubs, many only started playing after they moved into a Ryman village. An incubator of sorts for Juniors of the game! Edmund Hillary is fortunate to have bowlers who have been involved with Centres, Bowls NZ, Umpires, greenkeepers, and club administration over many years and have the knowledge to run these tournaments.
