Scroll down to read more! RYSE ANNOUNCEMENTSApplication Reminder: RYSE Virtual Visiting Mini-Clerkship Have you heard about the RYSE Virtual Visiting Mini-Clerkship? This two-week, non-graded virtual experience, for non-Emory medical students who intend to apply to and pursue a career in internal medicine (or an IM subspecialty) and exposes them to Emory's thriving academic medical center and careers in medicine. We encourage interested rising fourth-year medical students with an anticipated graduation of Spring 2025, especially those from groups underrepresented in medicine, including but not limited to underrepresented minorities and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, to apply for our RYSE Virtual Visiting Student Mini-Clerkship. The mini-clerkship will host two separate cohorts this fall. The deadline to apply is August 7, 2024. Carlos Saldana, MD, interviewed on CNN Carlos Saldana, MD, (Infectious Diseases), appeared on CNN’s “First Of All With Victoria Blackwell” to discuss his findings on the disproportionate rates of HIV impacting the Latinx community. RYSE Spotlight on Chemeka Watson Chemeka Watson, a physician assistant (PA) who has worked closely with the Division of Infectious Diseases for the past 14 years, was recently chosen as one of 16 PAs across the U.S. to meet and converge on setting standards for the profession with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). The group of 16 met in June at the NCCPA Headquarters in Johns Creek, Georgia. NCCPA is the only certifying organization for PAs in the U.S. Chemeka is proud to have been chosen to participate in critical discussions and provided with the opportunity to contribute. She describes this experience as “the most exhilarating professional moment of my career." Call for Applications: Health Equity Advocacy Course The SOM is taking applications for their Health Equity Advocacy Course. This is a five-month, multi-pronged educational intervention that will bring faculty, learners, and community members from several institutions together to advocate around common health-related priorities. This innovative course goes beyond didactic instruction and includes experiential learning that will leverage collaboration and, importantly, have tangible outcomes as a result. The deadline to apply is July 24, 2024. NBME Grant Opportunity The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) recently launched a new grant program for early- and mid-career faculty looking to explore ideas that advance medical education and assessment. The 2024 theme for the Emerging Innovators Grant is Promoting Equitable Assessment in Medical Education. NBME will fund up to four $25,000 proposals, and the deadline for grant applications is now August 21, 2024. Potential topics may include:

Share Your Voice for Healing and Growing As a part of the School of Medicine's strategic plan to design and implement an anti-racism educational curriculum, the Actionable Education Initiative (AEI) subcommittee on anti-racism is asking the SOM community to share a story or experience influenced by difference. Submissions can include stories of microaggressions, discrimination, harm, threat of harm, processing, healing, or allyship. The de-identified stories will inform educational interventions and policies to help eradicate bias and injustice within our institution. Please note, that if you do not wish to officially report any harm at this time, please keep your submissions free of identifying information, as our team members are mandatory reporters. We hold the utmost respect for your discretion and do not discourage you from reporting someone who has committed harm to you. Additionally, Emory University's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offer a variety of programs, services, and resources to promote emotional, behavioral, collegiate, and workplace health. RYSE AFFINITY MONTH CELEBRATIONSRecognizing Disability Pride Month Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July and is an opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of people with disabilities. July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society for people with disabilities. People with disabilities deserve to live full, self-determined lives, yet discrimination persists for one in four U.S. adults living with a disability. As we recognize Disability Pride this month, learn more about ways to celebrate and support our disability community below:
Call for Submissions: Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight One of the ways the DOM strives to recognize the work of our diverse community year-round is through focused affinity month celebrations to promote sharing, awareness, and learning. We are seeking self-nominations and/or peer nominations of faculty, staff, and trainees who are willing to share their stories for Hispanic Heritage Month, taking place from September 15 to October 15. We want to hear from you! Do you know a DOM faculty, staff, or trainees that we should spotlight? Submit your nominations by August 31 to be considered! In Case You Missed It: Emory SOM AAPI Mentor-Mentee Social The Emory SOM AAPI Affinity group hosted a mentor-mentee social gathering at a local Indian restaurant in Decatur. This gathering was filled with fun interactive activities arranged by DOM faculty members, Deepa Ranganathan, MD, (Hospital Medicine) and Fariha Sultan, MD (Geriatrics and Gerontology)! Attendees enjoyed interacting with the mentees which included learners from the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA). All were able to share stories and experiences including their journey and choosing medical profession as a career. DOM ANNOUNCEMENTSSarah Turbow, MD, awarded a Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation President’s Grant Faculty members from the School of Medicine and Rollins School of Public Health have been awarded a Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation President’s grant to increase collaboration among future health professionals and help support the non-clinical needs of patients. The grant will support the "Transforming Interprofessional Education Through Student Hotspotting" project and will be co-led by Sarah Turbow, MD, (General Internal Medicine) and Jodie Guest, PhD, MPH, (Department of Epidemiology). The program addresses the need for more experiential interprofessional education by fostering collaborative, patient-centered care among high-cost, high-need patients and teams of five to seven students from local medical, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, public health, and social work programs.
