The bridge is located on Collins Avenue at Edge Hill and provides access to the popular Cairns Botanic Gardens and Tanks Arts Centre precincts. Mayor Bob Manning was joined by former city engineer Graeme Haussmann in unveiling the naming plaque. Mr Haussmann played a key role in establishing Cairns’ modern amenities. He worked as the City Engineer for Cairns City Council for 32 years from 1956 to 1988, spanning a pivotal time in Cairns’ development. The new bridge includes safer cycling lanes, lighting, footpaths and screening that features botanical elements and musical notes to complement the precinct. The project was funded through grants from the Australian Government and Queensland Government. Cairns Regional Council will investigate all potential options for a public service that would provide easy movement of passengers into and around the CBD area. This may include a park-and-ride system using to allow people to park outside of the city centre. Mayor Bob Manning said the objective was to make the city centre more accessible to people who might otherwise avoid the area due to parking constraints. The touchscreen display titled A camera on Gallipolli: the photographs of Charles Ryan features images captured by an Australian Army Colonel serving in a medical role. The Queen's Baton will arrive in Cairns on 15 March 2018 and will stay in the region for three days. Across Australia, approximately 3800 batonbearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘Friendly Games’ as part of the QBR. Batonbearers are people of all abilities who inspire others to be great.
