Lahaina’s Sacred Hearts School Continues to Move Forward

As the Maui wildfires swept through Lahaina on Aug. 8 it took lives and homes, and left destruction. It’s been more than two months since the tragic event and folks in Maui are still working day and night to recover. At Sacred Hearts School, temporarily relocated nine miles north of its Lahaina address, the focus is on the children and their educational and emotional needs.

“We’ve established a routine which always is a healthy way of promoting a sense of security and reassurance,” said principal Tonata Lolesio.

Half of the school burned down in the flames, leaving the teachers and students with no building to return to any time soon. Lolesio, however, was not discouraged. She and her staff got the school back up and running on Aug. 28 at Sacred Hearts Mission in Kapalua.

Enrollment is at capacity at 220, and there is a waiting list. Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Oct 28

Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu

From the Office for Social Ministry

This year, including all during summer at Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners have shared their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Livestream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week

Saint Anthony Mary Claret
1807–1870
Memorial – October 24

Anthony Adjutor John Claret y Clara was born in the small town of Sallent, in the Province of Barcelona, Spain. Sallent was primarily an agricultural and textile-based town, where life centered around the local Catholic church. His parents were devout Catholics who raised their children well in the faith. Anthony was the fifth of eleven children, but only five survived to adulthood. His father ran a factory that manufactured thread and cloth, and provided a sufficient income for his family. As a child, Anthony developed a compassionate heart. Read more...
