Click here Monday 2 October 2023 Parking update: Mt Albert southern carpark closed from 16 OctoberKia ora koutou We’ve been advised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MHUD) that developers will take possession of the southern carpark (the free carpark behind B111) from 16 October 2023. The last day we’ll have use of it will be Friday 13 October. With the closure of this free carpark, all carparks fall under our paid parking plan. I know parking is an important issue for many of us, so please check the information and options below, including a newly opened carpark at B60-61. Why is the southern carpark closing? As we outlined in 2022, the southern carpark is situated on land owned by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MHUD). They’ve allowed us to use the space while they planned for housing developments. Those plans are now complete and work will soon begin. The carpark was provided free of charge as it was a temporary arrangement. Where to park? We’ve observed that several carparking areas around campus are underutilised, plus we’ve opened a new temporary (until at least the end of 2023) parking space at the B60-61 site, which will help with demand once the southern carpark closes. Please refer to the below map of parking spaces around campus (almost 1,000 spaces), access roads and showers for those who bike, walk or run to campus. This map is currently correct but, with the development work continuing, we’ll regularly update it and share it on our website. A reminder that, once the southern carpark closes, our paid parking plan applies to all carparks Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm for all staff and students. However, payment is not required during Unitec Semester breaks or in the weekends. You can use any parking meter to pay for your parking, not just the one closest to your carpark. Click here for a larger version of the map. It will also be shared on our website from 16 October. Making sure those who need carparks, can access themWith the provision of new parking spaces, we don’t expect a shortfall for the rest of this year. However, we do encourage teams to consider their flexible working arrangements, to spread the demand on our carparks across the week, particularly at exams and final assessment times. For example, Mondays are usually the busiest days on campus, so if any of our Support teams can rearrange their team’s onsite days to avoid being on campus on Mondays, this may help our ākonga and Academic kaimahi to find a park – this is especially important during the upcoming exam weeks (6 – 26 November). We also encourage those who can, to explore alternative ways to get to campus, such as public transport, carpooling, biking and walking. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate the changes around our Mt Albert Wairaka campus and surrounding areas. We are doing our best to provide a safe and accessible campus. If you have questions about parking logistics please email carparking@unitec.ac.nz. Ngā mihi Prof Martin Carroll |
