THEFT ALERT: HAS YOUR HEADLIGHT BEEN DAMAGED?
Damage to his vehicle’s headlight irritated a cybersecurity researcher and automotive engineering consultant but when his RAV4 was stolen a few days later, it led to him discovering a completely new method of car theft. With the new method, thieves break open a headlamp and splice their way into the headlight wiring to use its connection to send messages, enabling them to manipulate other devices to open the vehicle.

Copper cable theft is a nationwide scourge. The city of Cape Town lost around R2.5 million to metal theft in the fourth quarter of 2022, and if unaccounted-for stolen scrap is factored in, the true cost could be up to three times higher.
