Each month, we highlight a photograph from Facing the Crisis, our virtual exhibition documenting the human impact of the climate crisis. This photograph, taken by Dennis Lupenga, on behalf of Water Aid, shows a bore hole made to extract water in a large lake bed in the Lake Chilwa basin, Malawi. The lake has no outlet, is shallow and saline, and the level of water is greatly affected by seasonal rains and summer evaporation. On several occasions, the lake disappears during exceptionally dry
weather.
