The Essential Eight will likely be mandated in your backyard sometime soon…

There's always a headline, a disaster warning, an emergency and dare we say it, another Covid wave. So, the truth is that cyber-attack warnings have become just another thing to tune out. Don't ignore them!

What is the Essential Eight?

The Australian [Commonwealth] Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) established the Essential Eight controls some time ago to manage cybercrime. And, while no set of mitigation strategies is guaranteed to protect against all cyber threats, organisations are recommended to implement eight essential mitigation strategies from the ACSC's Strategies to Mitigate Cyber Security Incidents as a baseline.

Why is the Essential Eight suddenly so important?

  • Implementing these strategies makes it much harder for cyber hackers to compromise systems.
  • Cybercrime is rising, with Australians losing over $33 billion to cybercrime in FY21.
  • New South Wales was hit the hardest in 2021 followed by Victoria, with 43% of cyberattacks targeting small to medium businesses.
  • Privacy protection and trust depend on it.

Is it likely to affect your business operations?

Yes. All state and federal governments are internally working toward delivering the Essential Eight strategies. As part of this drive, we expect providers of specific services will also be expected to meet the Essential Eight standard.

Solutions, please!

The ADIA Academy is an immediate source of information security awareness and training. There are several packages already available that work to improve cyber security.

As a new initiative, commencing Thursday, 7 August 2022, the ADIA Academy will offer the new Essential Eight Modules providing explanations and strategies necessary to implement the ACSC's Essential Eight requirements.
