Emory GIM and Primary Care at EmWELL Dinner

EmWell partners with health system teams to make well-being a lasting value, address stressors, optimize work, and foster a culture of wellness and fulfillment. Emory WHSC Office of Well-Being (EmWELL) was formed in 2022 to develop strategies that protect the well-being of healthcare and health sciences professionals at Emory. EmWELL partners with teams across the system to establish well-being as a long-term value, address environmental stressors, optimize the nature of work, and enable a culture that prioritizes and promotes wellness and professional fulfillment.

A Message from the Dean's Office

The School of Medicine's Dean’s Office is facilitating an upcoming external review of the Department of Medicine.  This is a regular department review process that every SOM department goes through.  

In preparation for the review, please update your Emory First online faculty profile and publications before November 1.

  1. Visit  profiles.emory.edu and log in using your Emory University NetID
  2. Connect your ORCID iD to your profile to make claiming your publications easier!
  3. Accept or reject your publications
  4. Add your headshot, academic appointments, and education credentials.
  5. Consider adding an overview

Referring Patients to the Emory Special Diagnostics Clinic

The Emory Special Diagnostics Clinic is housed within the Seavey Comprehensive Internal Medicine Clinic at 1365 Clifton Rd. Their clinicians specialize in seeing patients with ailments and conditions that have gone undiagnosed/unanswered despite evaluation from a multitude of physicians.

Patients can be referred by their primary care physician, specialist, or even self-refer. Emory clinicians can make this referral easily by ordering a routine referral to Internal Medicine. Within that referral, there is a box to choose “Diagnostic Clinic” (see screenshot below). This is all that is required for you to begin the process of your patient being seen in the Emory Special Diagnostics Clinic.

 
 
 

  27th Annual Cardiology Update for the Non-Cardiologist
Nov. 8-9

The Cardiology Update for Non-Cardiologists is a comprehensive cardiology course geared towards primary care, family medicine, and internists. We will cover in- and outpatient cardiology topics including heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, vascular disease, EKG interpretation, etc.

Save the date for Health Equity Day!

RYSE, in partnership with the Office of Health Equity at Grady, will be hosting the 5th annual Health Equity Day on May 20, 2025.

For the first time, Health Equity Day will be a hybrid event, engaging communities both virtually via Zoom and in person at the Trauma Auditorium at Grady Hospital. The theme for next year’s event will be Community Partnerships. More information to come in the upcoming months, so stay tuned!

New Masters of the American College of Physicians

Congratulations to Dr. Jada Bussey-Jones, Dr. Stacy Higgins, and Dr. Kimberly Manning for being elected to Masterships from the American College of Physicians. This honor recognizes individuals with outstanding contributions to the practice of medicine, teaching, research, public service, leadership, and medical volunteerism.

 
 
 
 
 

The med psych unit at Grady is the only such unit in the state and the faculty are appointed in GIM. Last week was the annual Association of Medicine and Psychiatry (AMP) meeting and Dr. Lauren Gensler won two awards: the Kathol Pioneering Spirit Award and an Outstanding Service Award for the contributions made while being the co-chair of the meeting. The Kathol Award was established in 2016 to honor Dr. Roger Kathol, a founding member of AMP who exemplified the award criteria. He is an Internist and Psychiatrist who is both innovator and pioneer of the model of integrative care in the inpatient setting. He is an outstanding clinician, providing integrated medical and psychiatric care for his patients, as well as a dynamic educator, astute businessman.

Dr. Mikhail Akbashev received commendation on behalf of the Anesthesiology Department, which held its annual Perioperative Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Faculty Development Workshop and Dr. Akbashev taught lung ultrasound. ​

​He received outstanding feedback from the Anesthesiology Dept. learners, and they appreciate his willingness to share his expertise (and his Saturday) to further their department's education.

 
 

Dr. Dylan Baker and Dr. Meredith Lora received 2 years of funding for their project: "Evaluation of direct to inject point of care HIV testing to facilitate rapid initiation of CAB-LA for PrEP."

Need a Master of Public Health student assistant?

  • MPH students can be very helpful on research projects as they bring skills they are learning in their program
  • MPH students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week as long as the work fulfills one of their MPH program competencies
  • Students are back so applications need to go in NOW for Fall semester
