Click here Friday 2 May ![]() Message from Mike WallerKia ora koutou, good afternoon, 下午好, 안녕하세요 We have quickly settled back into the routine of school, with students and staff enjoying reconnecting following the holidays. The change of weather brings an interesting change in the students as they naturally focus more indoors and channel their energy toward the classroom, meaning these winter terms are so important in their academic development. Since the security concern on campus just before the holidays, I have remained in contact with the office of our local MP as we look to resolve the situation. I understand that messages have been exchanged between Ministers highlighting our concerns and seeking change. I will keep you updated when I receive further information. In order to gather your views on our site master plan, I will be holding four parent consultation sessions during May, on different days and times, to ensure that as many of you as possible can attend. The sessions will be:
A reminder message will be sent to you next week with an opportunity to sign up so that we can gauge the numbers likely to attend. School attendance is a prominent topic, especially with the impact absence has on learning. A recent article published by the Department for Education in the UK highlighted the impact: At primary school, children who attend school nearly every day in Year 6 (95-100% attendance) are 30% more likely to reach the expected standard in reading, writing and maths compared to similar pupils who attend 90-95% of the time. The link is even stronger at secondary school. Simply, attendance matters and is something we all need to be mindful of. As I noted earlier in the week, we are making changes to the newsletter to make it more informative and relevant. Instead of only reflecting the week past on a Friday, it will shift to being more forward-looking and sent on a Sunday to highlight events happening in the week ahead. The articles will be more concise, and we will also trial some video content to reflect our modern patterns of consuming information. This means there will not be a newsletter sent next week. Instead, you will receive the next newsletter for the week ahead on Sunday, 11 May. With students now in winter uniform, I ask for your help in making sure it is worn correctly when leaving home in the morning. It is important that we all represent ourselves in a way that highlights our values of respect for self and respect for others. I hope you all enjoy the weekend ahead. Best wishes, Dates for your Diary![]() Monday 5 May

![]() Message from Sian CoxonKia ora tatou, What a great week we have had in the Primary, students were happy to see each other and rekindle their friendships on the playgrounds and parents were smiling at drop off on Tuesday morning. We welcomed 17 new students to P5 on Tuesday along with their teacher Mr Rhodes and two students in Year 5. At the pōwhiri on Wednesday you would think they had all been at school for weeks, they were so settled and seemed to enjoy the occasion. In classes students were focussed and ready to learn. As teachers we have been learning to use Rosenshine’s principles to deepen our practice and be the most effective teachers we can be. The beginning of a lesson starts with a daily review, and we have been using new techniques to check for understanding. This is one of the most important of Rosenshine’s ten principles and involves lots of questioning, the use of mini whiteboards, thumbs up or down, or agree/disagree boards to check that each student understands the concepts being taught. It is great to see this work in action in our classrooms. Winter sports are starting up again and it has been exciting to hear some of the pre-season results our teams are achieving. Snow sports will start this afternoon at Snowplanet; skiing and snowboarding are great sports to get involved in as they can be enjoyed well into adulthood. We are proud of the engagement levels of our students and benefit in the classroom from the coordination and confidence that physical education brings. Next week we continue with Life Education where students meet Harold the giraffe to learn about health and wellbeing. Our assemblies will be run by P23 and P9, top swimmers will be involved in the North Shore swimming championships, and we have class photos on Wednesday 7 May. Last term’s House competition winners will enjoy their reward on Friday, and they are very excited about that! Have a great weekend, it looks like it will be sunny. Ngā mihi, Primary News![]() Life Education is Back at Pinehurst this Term! The Life Education Truck and programme, featuring Harold the Giraffe, is a well-established health and wellbeing initiative delivered in schools across New Zealand. I hope the recent school break provided you with some enjoyable family time and a chance to rest. For me, the holidays were very special as I welcomed my second grandchild, Luca Stephen. It was wonderful to spend some precious time with him. Last Friday, 25 April, marked the 109th commemoration of ANZAC Day. Pinehurst students honoured the occasion by participating in both the Coatesville and Albany ANZAC services, paying tribute to the Australians and New Zealanders who served and gave their lives in conflicts and peacekeeping missions. Pinehurst school was represented by student leaders Sissi Yang, Daniel Alsammak, Oren Dabbach and Brianna Lee, who embodied our school values with dignity and respect. Lest we Forget. It was lovely to welcome students back on Tuesday and especially heartening to see our returning students extend kindness and support to those who are new to the College. We are already settling into a productive term, with much to celebrate and plenty to look forward to. On Wednesday, we held a pōwhiri to welcome three new students, a new laboratory technician, and two new teachers. Matthew Campbell joins us in the Science Department, teaching science and physics, and Leah Haas has become part of our Social Sciences teaching team. Term 2 promises to be full and exciting, with events such as Cross Country, the School Ball, Matariki celebrations, the Cultural Market, and our highly anticipated school production of The Wizard of Oz. Senior students in Years 11 to 13 will also be preparing for their midyear examinations beginning 28 May; preparation for these important assessments should now be underway. A reminder please that all students are expected to be in full winter uniform, including blazers, each day. As always, our school values of Respect for Self, Respect for Others, and Excellence, should continue to guide us in all that we do. Best wishes for a wonderful term ahead.
