Dear Brookes Westshore families and friends,

As we reach the end of May, it has been wonderful to see our students learning beyond the classroom through their year-end field trips. These trips are a special way to celebrate a full year of growth, friendships, and shared experiences. Students are enjoying time together, building memories, and strengthening the sense of community. I know the Grade 4-6 students are looking forward to their year-end trips next week.

Our DP1 students did their Collaborative Science Project yesterday. It was inspiring to see them working together across disciplines, asking thoughtful questions, and applying their knowledge in creative ways. This kind of collaboration and inquiry reflects the IB learner profile in action, especially being thinkers, communicators, and open-minded learners.

As we head into the final weeks of the school year, there is still a great deal to look forward to in our classrooms. These last three weeks of June are an important time to continue building on the learning, routines, and relationships that students have developed all year. Let’s carry that same positive energy and sense of responsibility through to the very end.

With gratitude,

Dr. Rui Li

Principal

Graduation 2026

Graduation is always a special time, but this year was made even more memorable as we hosted international education visitors all the way from Mexico and Ukraine!

A warm thank you to Matilde Patino (Boarding Experiences), Maria Frias, Lucia Campana, Pamela Gonzalez, Teresa Esquerra (Ad Astra), Elena Pshegorska, and Roussanne (Osvita Tour) for spending time with us. Our guests had a wonderful time touring our campus, connecting with our amazing staff, and interviewing students. They even managed to squeeze in a visit to Royal Roads University and the stunning Hatley Castle!

MYP2 and DP1 Strathcona Park Trip

The trip to Strathcona Park Lodge last week was an incredible experience filled with adventure, connection, and unforgettable memories. Highlights included a beautiful bog walk and hike with stunning lake views, kayaking and canoeing out to a small island and relaxing on the beach in the sunshine, and taking on the zipline and high ropes through the trees. Students also learned valuable outdoor skills such as fire building, tying different styles of knots, and setting up tarps, while enjoying winding down each evening with the sauna and cold dips.

One of the biggest highlights was the closing ceremonies scavenger hunt involving all of the teams, which ended with an energetic dance off and Ricardo landing a backflip to loud cheers from all the students!

Throughout the trip, students pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones, tried new activities, and supported one another through every challenge and adventure.

This year, Kate and Hanli graduated, and with them they leave a meaningful legacy through their service action—the Little Free Library. This initiative has been a wonderful contribution to our community, encouraging a love of reading, sharing, and connection. Their work will continue, as they are thoughtfully passing the baton to Laila, Sofia, and Vivienne, who will further develop this service action with a continued focus on literacy and community engagement.

Little Free Libraries are small, community-based book exchanges where people can freely take a book or leave one. They are part of a global movement that promotes literacy, accessibility to books, and a sense of shared responsibility within neighbourhoods. Our students’ involvement exemplifies service action by identifying a need, taking initiative, and creating a sustainable project that benefits others.

You can explore similar initiatives locally through the Victoria Placemaking website and map, which highlight community-driven projects like this one:
