Who we are: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is a nonprofit organization that strives to improve education and opportunities of lower-income families within Allegheny County through strategic partnerships with the community and faith-based organizations. We offer programs for students from kindergarten through high school that focus on supplementary learning as well as higher education.

Description: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in eager Pitt Psychology students looking to apply their academic learning with an authentic field experience in our High School University (HSU) program. The Neighborhood Learning Alliance High School University (HSU) Program partners with Carlow University and CCAC to provide primarily low-income and students of color access to free college courses and work-related work experience.

The Pitt Psychology intern will serve as a college and career readiness mentor for up to four 11th and/or 12th grade high school students. The mentor will serve as the key support person guiding the student through the NLA College and Career Readiness curriculum.

Duties of Intern:

• Guide mentees through the college application process.
• Support students with identifying and completing scholarships.
• Conduct small-focused group activities using the curricular resources provided.
• Collaborate with the HSU team to ensure the students are on track to meeting their personal goals.
• Support students with understanding the college application process, career pipeline programs, and high school-to-work opportunities.
• Conduct wellness checks with students and collaborate with the NLA team to secure outside resources needed for student success.
• Maintain meeting and case management notes.
• Assist with the overall planning and implementation of programming.
• Create a college and career readiness focus unit relevant to your student support group.

Requirements:  Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in candidates that have a strong interest in and connection to underserved communities. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to learning, developing, and working outside their comfort zone.  Candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume.

Clearances: FBI Background, PA State Background, PA Child Abuse, Mandatory Reporter Training, National Sex Offender Registry.

General Information:  The High School University (HSU) Fall & Spring program is held at Carlow University & The Community College of Allegheny County on Saturdays. Also, interns meet with students virtually or at their PPS school during lunch.

Description: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in eager Pitt Psychology students looking to apply their academic learning with authentic field experience in our K-5 Little Warriors After-School program. Neighborhood Learning Alliance’s (NLA) After-School Program is designed to empower K-5 students to embrace their genius, establish a sense of community, and explore learning activities that enhance their health and well-being. This is done through active play, project-based learning, enriched learning experiences, and field trips.

Duties of Intern:

• Teach positive interaction skills to K-5 students through modes of role play, storytelling, drawing, etc.
• Conduct small-focused group activities using the curricular resources provided.
• Collaborate with the K-5 team to create engaging learning activities.
• Support students with understanding their emotions and effective communication.
• Support the after-school staff with developing individual support plans.
• Create your own focus unit that addresses the immediate needs of the students being served as a culminating project.
• Assist with the overall planning and implementation of the daily programming and activities.
• Assist with daily procedures and program structures.
• Manage student attendance and activities.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program space.

Who we are: We’re HealthCorps – a national, non-profit organization committed to improving lives by addressing health inequities in communities through programming that includes innovative and engaging experiences for teens in education, leadership, and service learning. We empower teens by encouraging them to become change agents within their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Our program is grounded in the understanding that limited access to health education can lead to a lifetime of social, emotional and physical challenges.

Description:

As a TMHH Mentor, you will serve as a near-peer mentor to local middle and high school students over the semester. You will gain hands on experience leading our health and wellness club, Teens Make Health Happen, in area schools and by supporting teens in planning and leading wellness programming such as lunchtime demonstrations, step challenges and community improvement projects.

Duties of Intern:

Responsibilities:

• Develop Strong Relationships. You will collaborate with teen wellness leaders and site partners to ensure effective delivery of HealthCorps’ programming across 2 – 3 school sites. You will collaborate with your Regional Program Manager and other area mentors and participate in ongoing professional development and leadership opportunities provided by the organization at no-expense.
• Assess Your Schools’ Needs and Progress. You will research what health inequities the schools you serve are facing, and then measure your impact by completing a needs assessment, reporting, and tracking your work throughout your mentorship.
• Manage Teens Make Health Happen Clubs. You will plan and implement the successful delivery of the HealthCorps’ program offering, Teens Make Health Happen, between 6- 8+ hours (each week) throughout the course of the semester. Your commitment to this program will require you to be at your assigned school sites/campuses for 3-4 hours each week for instructional purposes.
• Share and Make Aware. You will host Café O Yea demonstrations at each of your sites monthly and support regional events. You will support and contribute to HealthCorps’ social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, etc.) by sharing program highlights, stories of impact, and photos that will shine a bright light on your students.
• Commit to the HealthCorps Mission. You will prioritize health and wellness on a daily basis and, ultimately, work to ensure that relevant, local health-resources are accessible for all students and staff at your respective sites. Your spark to serve will leave a lasting, positive impact on your community.
• Represent HealthCorps in Pittsburgh. You will be an embodiment and extension of our organization and our values, both inside and outside your sites. Your presence -- whether at your assigned sites or at an area-wide event -- will be an asset in outreach efforts that connect teens, staff and community members to HealthCorps resources and materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

• An undergraduate or graduate college student majoring, or interested, in public health, public policy, biology, nutrition, marketing, psychology, education, social work or other related fields
• In good academic standing with your university
• A commitment of 6-8+ hours each week to the mentorship for the entire Fall or Spring semester
• A self-expectation and strong desire to grow personally and professionally as a leader in the community, and as a speaker who is comfortable in learning and presenting on health-related topics to a teen audience

General Information: 
The school sites are all in the Pittsburgh region and accessible by local transportation. Site placement will depend on the mentor's availability.

Terms Offered: Fall or Spring semester 2024-2025 academic year.

We host virtual 'admissions office hours' on Friday afternoons throughout the summer, allowing prospective students to drop in and ask questions without committing to a full information session or one-on-one appointment.
