The University of Pittsburgh Academic Support Services for Student Athletes (ASSSA) is seeking Junior, Senior or Graduate Level student(s) to assist students in time management and study skills. The University of Pittsburgh is currently seeking tutors for Academic Support Services for Student Athletes (ASSSA) in the areas of LCJS, ASL, Anthropology, Astronomy, Communications, Computer Science, Economics, Geology, Neuroscience, Psychology, Sociology, and Foreign Languages. ASSSA is designed to assist student athletes with reaching their fullest academic and personal development while at the University of Pittsburgh. The University, the Department of Athletics and ASSSA are committed to promoting both the academic and athletic achievements of its student athletes while upholding the academic integrity of the institution. ASSSA tutors provide individual and small group tutoring sessions in the subject that the tutor has obtained a grade of at least a B or better. The goal of an ASSSA tutor is to provide assistance to the student athlete in specific academic course content as well as to foster the development of successful and independent academic behavior. Tutoring sessions will primarily take place in person; however, virtual tutoring may be considered for special circustances (i.e., team travel).

Area of Research: Social Psychology; Higher Education; Sense of Belonging; First-Gen student; Gender; Equity in Education; Self-Affirmation; Intervention Sciences

Description of Research:

We are seeking motivated students to participate in interdisciplinary research in social psychology and educational sciences. Overall, our lab focuses on diversity and equity issues both in the educational and political domain. This call in particular is seeking students to work on projects that examine the effects of a belonging intervention on a variety of psychological and performance outcomes. Interested students demonstrate enthusiasm to learn and engage in conducting research. Students should be prepared to work collaboratively across different project teams, as well as complete independent tasks. Training and supervision will be provided.

Duties of Students:
Students will be trained and involved in various phases of the research process. Students will attend weekly meetings and assist in developing study materials and procedures. Research task will include transcribing and coding open-ended responses; data cleaning and wrangling; and literature review.

Students should be available at least 2 partial days per week for the summer semester . Total hours required per is week 8 to 10 hours. Students will be able to enroll for credits in the Fall/Spring. Previous research experience is not required.

Mentorship:
This will be an opportunity for students to receive mentorship as it pertains to interest in research, statistical training, data / coding, undergraduate thesis, and more.

Addition Requirements:

  • 3.0 or higher GPA in the last two semesters (this is flexible; we can evaluate on a case by case basis)
  • Minimum 6 credits in Psychology, including PSY0036/0037 (Research Methods)
  • Strong motivation to learn about psychology research about: fostering equity in higher education, sense of belonging, self-affirmation, college experience of minorized and first-gen students, broaden access to STEM, Policy
  • Dependable with ability to work both collaboratively and independently

Post-Graduate Employment Opportunities

Full-time Research Assistant, VA Providence Medical Center

The VA Providence Healthcare System is looking to hire a full-time research assistant to work on several ongoing research studies including clinical trials testing pharmacotherapy for neuropathic pain in Veterans and hospital aftercare programs for patients with co-occurring mood and substance use disorders, which are run by Principal Investigators, Jane Metrik, Ph.D. and Brandon Gaudiano, Ph.D. The position is available to start in September 2024 or sooner. Drs. Metrik and Gaudiano are psychologists at the VA Providence Healthcare System affiliated with the Brown University’s Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and Brown’s School of Public Health, the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies (CAAS).

The VA Providence Healthcare System is located in Providence, RI, provides comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care to Veterans residing in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. The current research projects will involve coordination among several VA clinics and services as well as coordinating with other VAs across the country involved in one of the multisite clinical trials.

Job Description

Be part of a dynamic and productive multidisciplinary team, conducting cutting edge clinical research that impacts and improves the health and well-being of our nation’s Veterans. Brown University-affiliated researchers working at the VA Providence Healthcare System are seeking to hire a research assistant for several grant-funded studies including a clinical trial testing pharmacotherapy for neuropathic pain and a study of post-hospital interventions for patients with mood disorders and comorbid substance use disorders. Opportunities will include attendance at academic presentations, monthly brown bag discussions, and educational and professional development sessions on campus and those offered by our affiliates.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

• Recruiting and tracking research participants, screening electronic medical records, and conducting research assessments with patients. Providing all aspects of support on clinical research protocols.
• Assisting with completing and maintaining study data collection forms and source documents. Maintaining research patient records and regulatory binders. Performing data entry and managing databases.
• Preparing for regulatory visits by monitoring safety reports, completing source documents, maintaining compliance documents, and assisting in protocol feasibility evaluation with Principal Investigator.
• Monitoring safety adverse events reports for study sponsors and preparing appropriate documentation for IRB under supervision of the Principal Investigator.
• Monitoring deadlines and preparing IRB applications, progress reports, and informed consent forms. Preparing documents for all review committees as required.
• Coordinating with the PI and other key research personnel to assure that clinical research activities are performed in accordance with federal/state and institutional regulations, policies and procedures.

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare field, psychology, public health, or related field required. Experience as a research assistant for studies involving human subjects. Experience with psychology/psychiatric research and/or working with Veteran populations desirable.

Full-time Research Assistant, Brandeis University

The Cognition, Psychopathology, Environment (CoPE) Lab in the Brandeis University Department of Psychology, directed by Dr. Hannah Snyder, is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to support several grant-funded studies. Start date is ideally July 2024, with some flexibility for later summer start dates.

The Research Assistant will work as part of a team responsible for the day to day running of the lab, including training and supervising student researchers, and will run participants through study protocols, including being trained to administer cognitive assessments, record physiological measures, and conduct clinical diagnostic interviews. They will also be responsible for maintaining IRB protocols and compliance, contacting and scheduling participants for research, managing data (including basic data analysis), purchasing necessary research supplies, and coordinating the work of others in the lab.

This position is ideal for individuals interested in applying for PhD programs in the future, with opportunities for mentorship. Staff can also take one graduate course a semester for free as part of Brandeis’ generous benefits package. Brandeis is located in Waltham, MA, a vibrant, diverse, and highly livable town in the Boston metro area. Initial appointment for one year, renewable based on performance, with a strong preference for candidates who can make a two-year commitment.

Required minimum qualifications:
• Bachelor or Master degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field, and possess knowledge of cognitive and clinical psychology concepts and methods.
• At least one year of previous experience conducting research with human participants that includes running participants through in-person research protocols, and excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with participants.
• The ability to work with others and independently.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, organization and attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong computer skills, including spreadsheets/databases and statistical software programs.

Preference will be given to candidates who also have one or more of the following:
• Experience with collecting physiological data (especially Biopac).
• Experience with diagnostic interviews (especially the SCID).
• Experience using R and/or MPlus for data analysis.
• Experience using Redcap or Qualtrics for survey administration.
• Experience with database software and managing large data sets.
• Experience training/mentoring students

This position is contingent on pending grant funding. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position if filled. Note that unfortunately we cannot sponsor employer visas for this position. However, international student applicants with at least two years of OPT eligibility (i.e., STEM extension eligible) are welcome to apply.
