Protocol Submissions in FY 2020-2023

Click here for a larger version of the figure.

This figure compares submissions of new protocols (red) and modifications to protocols (blue) in FY 2020 – FY 2023 for three committees supported by the Office of Research Protections (ORP): the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

Also shown are the total number of active protocols (green) approved by each committee.

Cumulatively, the IRB, IACUC, and IBC conducted over 10,000 protocol reviews in the past fiscal year.

ORP's FY23 Annual Report

This past year, ORP made strides in expanding the reach and impact of the University's research endeavors.

ORP's Annual Report for FY23 provides a comprehensive look at the accomplishments, challenges, and future goals of the divisions that comprise our Office.

UPS Strike Averted

A potential strike of United Parcel Service (UPS) employees has been averted, as a tentative collective bargaining agreement was reached.

Consequently, no disruptions in deliveries should be expected, and there is no need to increase inventories of research supplies in anticipation of a UPS strike.

Community Members on ORP Committees

Federal regulations require that many committees supported by ORP include community members. Community members must not have any affiliation with the University, such as being an employee or currently-enrolled student. Additionally, they must be able to attend monthly online committee meetings during the work day.

If you know of any community members who would be willing to serve, please contact Bill Yates, Vice Chancellor of Research Protections, at byates@pitt.edu

Hosting a Visitor? The Visitor Policy Ensures that Everyone is Protected

Compliance with the University's Visitor Policy ensures that both our guests and the University are protected. It is particularly important to properly onboard visitors who are working in laboratories to ensure they are adequately trained, receive required regulatory approvals, and are identified in the system of record as having the right to be on campus. A University member may be sanctioned if they host a visitation that is not properly approved.

Questions about the Visitor Policy should be directed to the Visitor Liaison by email or phone (412-624-2116).

Help Us Improve Research Security Training

Pitt is part of a consortium of universities funded by the National Science Foundation to produce research security training that will be required by the Final Research Security Program Standard Requirement.  We are looking for volunteers to provide feedback on a preliminary version of the training module at the University Center for Teaching and Learning.  Volunteers will need to report in person to the Teaching Center.

A $100 Amazon Gift Card will be provided to participants who complete a two-hour session at the Teaching Center.

We are particularly interested in the participation of early-career faculty and trainees in STEM fields and social sciences.

If you are interested in providing feedback regarding the Research Security Training Module, please email Bill Yates: byates@pitt.edu.
